Like I have said, I actually went to University and STUDIED the histories of sports and its evolution.
Its no point to argue with people who think Boxing is somehow special and time doesnt affect it, what part of Level of Competition (LOC) dont you get?
Lets take Jack Johnsons 26 rounder.
What was his punch-output?
What was his calories burned per minute?
What was in his body? Oh wait they never tested you?
What power were the punches being thrown at?
How many punches was his opponent throwing and landing per round?
How strict were the Judges?
Didnt he take a dive?
Was fight fixed? (most were)
You see you can put Manny/Floyd against some club fighter and they can go 30 rounds too if they trained for it, getting hit in the face hard by a guy who actually has skills?
But you guys keep thinking that Boxing is THE only sport in THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD not to change, and im not talking about guys from 70's+, im talking about the 1910+ guys who are calling them ATG, its a complete joke.
All you "Boxing is not diffirent, those dudes were ATG!" are worse than *****s,*******s,Tyson fans and Religious psychos.
No matter what proof you give you will always say nah man, he went like 30 rounds dude, I mean nobody can do that now man!
Contact your local university, enroll in a Sports course, actually examine the evidence of
1) how they fought
2) who they fought
3) Level Of Competition and the diffirence between a #1 and a #5
4) How they trained
5) How strict were the rules
6) Medicine
but yea, they are ATG! For real! Anyone can look good against a dude working a 50 hour week at a coal mine who has piss poor technique.
But according to you guys, Boxing is only sport in history of the world not to be affected by Evolution? You guys must be religious nuts who also Believe a fairy tale book right?Comment

It must've been a very poor university if that is all you can come up with. The boxers back then made up for the relative lack of pay compared to today's boxing by fighting far more often, thus "evolving" their skills through repeating the process hundreds of times, not by working in a coal mine 50 hours a week.
Now even I will admit that the fighting was very different in Jack Johnson's day, the techniques were planned out for long matches, wrestling was a part of the sport and the punching was influenced by bareknuckle strikes. But you will be surprised at how tough, conditioned and modern-looking the likes of Battling Nelson and Ad Wolgast were against each other in the 40 round war that they waged against each other, Nelson averaging about 80 punches a round with his non-stop workrate.

The guy in my signature fought in the 1920's by the way.Last edited by TheGreatA; 07-15-2011, 08:28 AM.Comment

I completely disagree, defense is one of the hardest components to master, especially if you are naturally an aggressively offensive fighter.Defensive boxing is way too easy and even then, you can only be "defensive" if another fighter is using offense.
I have a greater appreciation for people who can control opponents with their jab and offense. And I'm almost impossible to hit in the ring, but then I realized that it's immoral to continue to back up and take advantage of another man's offense.Comment

Yep Burley is hugely under-rated, one of the best fighters to never win a title.I waited a while to see if anyone would bring up one of the most underrated and avoided boxers in the history of the sport. No one has. He was even avoided by the G.O.A.T. Ray Robinson. His defensive skills were said to be second to none. He is ... and this video is ... a real hidden treasure in the game! I know that boxing enthusiasts, students of the game and old schoolers are all going to love this!
Watch, learn and enjoy people!!!
He often fought out of his weight class trying to land meaningful fights because nobody would give him a break.
The queue of pugs lining up to fight Charley Burley, wasnt that long
Also, I could be wrong here, but in spite of continually facing much larger opponents, he was never stopped. I could be wrong there, maybe I am thinking of someone else?
And Burley didnt demand a catchweight before he would jump in the ring with a bigger opponent, he fought as the smaller man.Comment
