With last week’s announcement that Floyd Mayweather Jr. would emerge from his cocoon and challenge Victor Ortiz for a share of the welterweight championship empire later this summer, the dueling factions in boxing’s most timely gang fight renewed cyber hostilities.

The Mayweather sycophants automatically chimed with the claim that the path from sabbatical to Ortiz would ultimately continue to a showdown with the pound-for-pound Filipino next spring.

On the other side, the Manny militia contrasted with the idea that fighting Ortiz was just another showy pit stop for a still-reticent “Money,” a move dictated more by fear than strategy.

And given all that as preamble, I’m still not exactly sure where I stand.

While I remained steadfast through delays that the superfight would indeed get made, I’d be lying if I said the resolve wasn’t shaken during what were surely out-of-character silences from a heretofore microphone-seeking Mayweather camp.

Rather than a signed contract, Team Pacquiao’s consent to stricter drug testing in the hoopla’s early phase was met with stony silence – giving swelling credence to an at-first silly claim that Floyd was more focused on protecting a 0 than risking his reputation.

IMHO...a Floyd fan can win a BOXING argument with a Manny fan all day atm....Manny's "DON'T WANNA BE TESTED" tour is gettin' corny...and I'm not talking about drug testing....I'm talking about his level of comp....he's not testing himself imo...they're on some selfish **** right now and not giving a **** about the fans...Arum has a song and dance for every PPV party he throws that doesn't read May vs Pac...its ALWAYS something he can say that makes his customers believe him and buy the second or third rate product for top dollar...smh

Who should Manny fight besides Floyd? Have you seen Floyd calling out Pac in the past 12 months? Have you seen Floyd make ANY effort to make a fight happen? I'm a little perplexed as to why the onus is on Pac to get this fight made? Both fighters should want it.

Other than Floyd, there aren't a lot of great fights out there. There are some decent names, but really not enough elite competition to say that he definitively SHOULD have picked one over the other.

Do you honestly believe that Bradley, Ortiz, or Berto would be THAT much better than JMM? I don't. I would prefer to see Bradley, but I don't think so much of Bradley that it should be a no-brainer decision over JMM.

Realistically, Floyd is the ONLY fight out there.

If you're gonna be a part-time fighter, you have to make fights that will be historically relevant. JMM, at the time was the P4P #2. That was a historically meaningful fight. Mosley, at the time was the P4P #3. That fight was historically meaningful. Ortiz is simply the best (outside of Money and Pac) in a crappy division. He should have been no better than Money's third option. Pac should have been first and if that couldn't have been made, he should have looked to the middleweight champ Sergio Martinez. Those are meaningful fights. Ortiz is nothing but a stay busy fight for a guy he who's basically been semi-retired for about 4 years. Not acceptable, IMHO.

I agree that Pac's last three opponents have been pathetic, and that's putting it mildly. But, the P4P #1 is stepping up (finally) and fighting a fellow P4P elite in Nov when he fights JMM for the third time. In the never-ending Mayweather-Pacquaio soap opera, Pac gets the nod from where I'm sitting when it comes to the two's choice of 2011 fall opponents. I'm ordering Pacquaio-Marquez III. I'm not ordering Mayweather-Ortiz. Pac's in a superfight, Mayweather isn't. That can't be disputed.

Floyd basically made Pac look suspect twice. First by coming back and fighting Mosley who was then the #1WW coming off of win over Antonio Margarito to become the WBA champion (Cotto's title) and now Victor ortiz, the new WBC WW Champion who holds an impressive win over an underfeated Andre Berto. Before Pac fans say Berto was all hype. Sure he was a lil hyped up but the dude was/is a fresh, prime fighter waaay better win than Pac over Mosley. I always said if Pac fought Mosley in 09 and then someone like Berto before Ortiz and now Ortiz, then I would have absolutely nothing to say about him. It's soooo obvious that Arum is running the show and he is all about the doe because if not, then Pac would have been fighting outside of Top Rank but Bob wants to keep it all inhouse. Bob uses the same formular he does with Chavez Jr, Gamboa, Lopez...... the list goes on. Pac is following the trend but the only difference is that he is fighting bigger names that used to be something but he conveniently caught them on the slide. I still can't get how big strong guys like Clottey and Mosley would fight so reluctantly? Anyways, Pac fans cannot say that Floyd fans are hyping this fight up because everyone pretty much cosigns this scrap with exception to them

All Floyd has to do is stick a jab in Pac's face everytime he tries to throw all them punches and check him in the body. Pac would be walking into counter punches all day in that fight. Pac doesn't know how to engage if his opponent is not rushing him. Mosley was on the run and Pac couldn't cut him off and put him down. Pac ain't ready for Floyd. Roach already said he doesn't have a game plan for Floyd and needs to switch Manny up and get him to see what he sees. He has to change Pac's whole style up against Floyd who switches up on the fly. Pac ain't beating Floyd.

I normally have a difference in opinion with your comments but I agree here.
Seems Pacquiao struggles a bit with fighters who are not rushing him, and using boxing skills.
I don't think Mayweather will need to use a jab as he has never been a jab thrower. I can't really ever remember him using a jab all night long. The key to him beating Pacquiao ( if ever both get in the ring) will be his lead right hands. He is deadly and accurate with those right hands and after a few rounds of right counters I could see Pacquiao slowing down.

It will be very interesting to see the Marquez/Pacquiao III fight, because in their first 2 fights Marquez landed that right hand at will. Wonder if he could do it again in their 3rd fight.

WHAT?! JMM at 144LBs where Floyd already white washed him? I agree that JMM is a true fighter with heart and skill but clearly Ortiz who is now a full fledge WW is a better look for a fighter that considers himself the best. JMM is not a WW fighter and we already witnessed what he can and can't do above 135 and Pac is fighting him at 144, where he could have fought him at 140. Pac 3rd fight against JMM is a super fight? Really? OK, that's your opinion but Mayweather/Ortiz is a match of a young determined fighter with something to prove coming off a fight of the year performance to get it on with Mayweather, the undefeated veteran who has been on a lay off and has a lot to protect being undefeated and all. Ortiz/Mayweather should be good. I got Mayweather in that one but curious to see what is going to pop off. IF JMM gives Manny a hard time at 144 then you already know Pac ain't seeing Floyd because Floyd treated Marquez like he was a highschool guy picking on a public school kid.

Pac's fighting JMM, who's currently in everyone's P4P top 5. Mayweather is fighting Ortiz, who got KO'd by Marcos Maidana and fought to a draw with Lamont Peterson. I'm generally on Money's side when it comes to his opponents versus Pac's. But please, Pac is clearly in the bigger fight this fall.
