Floyd Mayweather does not need to fight Cotto. The guy is a bum, why does Floyd need to fight him? Hes got a better fight with Victor Ortiz to look forward to.

Ring Magazine ranks Cotto the #1 in JMW, a division where they do not have a champion. If FMJ wins, he can proclaim himself as the man in that division. And... Cotto owns a belt.

He can prove to everyone that he is better than Pac by defeating Cotto more decisively than how Pac did it.

He can dispel the notion of some that he only wins in fantasy fights.

He will improve his ATG standing tremendously.
Beating a common opponent more impressively doesn't mean you're a better fighter. Just apply the Ali, Foreman, Frazier triangle theory.

Please review the reasons why a Cotto fight is a lot better fight for FMJ than any fight outside of Pac or Martinez, including the Ortiz fight. If you disagree.. explain.

            To Hi Hater:
Ali defeated both Frazier and Foreman.
In Pac and FMJ's case, they have not fought each other and may never do, so a common opponent could be a gauge. It may not be the best gauge but under the circumstances, it is the best we can have.

Fighting Cotto Now DOES NOTHING FOR HIM!

Cotto contract with Arum does end this year though if I am not mistaken, so what I can see happening, is Cotto jumping to Golden Boy and fighting Alvarez maybe next year, I could really see that happening

What does the Ortiz fight do for FMJ except as a tune up? If FMJ will not fight Pac or Martinez, is there another fight for him better than Cotto based on the reasons posted?

well if Floyd listens to Roger & chooses a guy like Cotto next before Pac then remember not to get upset about it

Floyd fighting Cotto for the jr middleweight title is indeed a good accomplishment.Assuming that he wins.If Floyd beats Ortiz & Cotto beats whoevers next that's a solid fight.
