I was pretty damn disappointed when I heard the PTI fools saying Nicklaus's achievement of winning The Masters was more impressive than Hopkins beating Pascal, mostly because their description of Pascal was something to the effect of, well he has a title, so I guess he's okay or something.

Although, I have no idea how you are okay with listening to Atlas. His voice is terrible, he's an idiot, and talks about pretty much everything except the match when he is supposed to be commentating on the Friday Night Fights fights. Plus, he is generally wrong about everything.

You can't discredit this fight this time. Remember all these threads people, "hindsight".

ESPN has zero credibility when talking boxing, Brian Kenny has a little but almost everyone else on the network has no clue. Casual fans have more knowledge of the current state of boxing than the analysts at ESPN at this point.

Jim Rome and the rest of the talking heads at ESPN, save for the boxing crew, should STFU about a sport they know nothing about.

Mayweather/Ortiz is 1) a very good fight and 2) infinitely better than the crap Manny has fed us in his last two fights.

Floyd is fighting a younger, bigger, hard hitting southpaw titleholder coming off a a big win.

When is the last time Manny did any of that?

And before guys start screaming I'm a Floydiac or Manny hater, I keep my criticism of both even. They both have picked and chosen over their elite level part of their careers. But in this case, Floyd has chosen a tough fight and I don't think anyone can deny that.

Manny has bodyguards in high places....you dudes look at certain things as CONSPIRACY THEORIES and **** so most of the time I just fall back like the kíd in school who knows the answer to the question but won't raise his hand to answer it...he'll just keep it to himself.....ppl fell for the okey doke in '01 and have been dumbed down to the point of believing ANYTHING the media says....The label "conspiracy theory" is commonly used to try to discredit criticism of the powerful in government or business.....Manny has the light...certain powerful cats has made the sport of boxing HIS....now I guess I'll be called a hater of a certain fighter for trying to explain why the media is talkin' ******...it is what it is!!

                Big fan of Rome.

Seriously though, easy to see why anybody who knows Boxing is disappointed. Mayweather picks a fight against a guy who up till a couple months ago lacked heart and warrior spirit.

Anybody who knows what Ortiz is about will not get the Maidana fight out of their minds.

What does beating Ortiz do for Mayweather's legacy? Not much without a KO.

Yeah the fight is the best scrap available for Mayweather in terms of credibility, but it has very little significance for his career.

I think that's what Rome is disappointed in.

I can't agree with you about Atlas though. I am well aware he says some stuff that comes from WAY OUT his ass, and at times can piss people off by what he says...but overall, he's very knowledgeable about the sport. And I also forgot about Brian Kenney.

I agree that those who aren't in the boxing business working for ESPN (or any other sports news corporation) should really keep quiet about boxing unless they are a hardcore fan about the sport.

It's really not even their fault, as it is more indicative of the very skewed view that the general public has about boxing. Do you remember when you started watching boxing? I started watching in 2007 when I was 19, and I remember thinking that jabs were irrelevant in scoring the round, power was the most important aspect of a boxer's characteristics, the only boxers who had any skills were the pure boxers who pot shotted and moved without trying to put any hurt on their opponents, heavyweights were the most exciting fights (that belief held by the general public is hilarious to me... most heavyweight fights suck... giant guys who gas out after a few rounds, and who don't throw very many punches to begin with), etc. The list can go on and on, and I'm sure it's not their idea to speak on such subjects, it's the people in pay grades above them, who also have no idea about the true nature of the sport.

Outside of Lampley, who may be my favorite person on the planet... Tessitore is my favorite boxing commentator. I think he is extremely talented, and it's only a matter of time until he gets a promotion up to one of the two premium cable networks to commentate. I wish Showtime would pick him, so they would finally have someone to bring some excitement to the fight with their commentary who's name is not Gus Johnson, as he is just generally annoying as all hell, and overreacts to every little thing that happens in the ring. Plus, I think Tessitore knows a lot more about boxing than Johnson could ever hope to. Hell, I'd say Tessitore knows more about the sport than Lampley to be totally honest.

I do love me some Brian Kenny as well. I think he's actually kind of dull when he commentates on fights, but he is brilliant in the studio, talking about significant fights that are coming up and what not.

Atlas probably does have a wealth of boxing knowledge, but I think it is more about the specifics of training. When he actually commentates a match, he does have good points, but they are very rare. Who knows, maybe he has a bunch of good things to add to the commentary, but he does seem to have a horrendous time trying to string words in the English language together to form a coherent sentence, so the majority of the time, he just pisses me off, and I have almost stopped giving him a chance. Also, he is easily the worst person who is paid to give his thoughts on boxing when it comes to predicting fights. I remember when that idiot picked Tony Thompson to beat Wladimir Klitschko. Literally the only person on the planet besides people who are so close to Thompson in his personal life that they had no other choice but to be delusional about his chances. And all of that is coming from a person who thinks Tony Thompson is quite good, and is actually probably one of the more talented heavyweights outside of the Klitschkos and Haye. Hell, I'd probably pick him over Povetkin, Dimitrenko and Chagaev to be honest.
