Cotto was ranked #1 when he fought Margarito but has never, ever been a Lineal Champion.
when mayweather beat baldomir and then retired, has anyone had the lineal title since then? mayweather obviously vacated it with the retirement, but do you think it is still vacant? if not who has it?

And Paul Williams was still in the division in 08 when Cotto Margarito happened. The fight was in July and Williams had just blasted Quintana in June.

There's a difference between Lineal Champion and being the #1 contender in the division, the latter is what Shane Mosley was after he beat Margarito.
so do you believe the lineal championship in the WW division has been vacant since mayweather retired after beating baldomir?

No because he officially didn't vacate it. I know the ring isn't the bible to go on, but think of it like the Zsolt Erdei situation. He moved up to crusierweight, and vacated his title, he made it clear that he wasn't at LHW anymore. Floyd still kept on to his WBC/Ring titles at 47 when he beat DLH at 54. He gave them up afterwards and retired.

Erdei isnt the lineal champ anymore at 175 either. Hopkins is.

Well, some people say It's Mayweather after beating Mosley and some people say it's vacant.

          It's an ongoing debate.

The Ring hasn't crowned a Lineal Champion since Floyd but other people like CyberBoxing have.

so if it hasn't been vacant since floyd's retirement, then you believe floyd has had it this whole time, or someone else has had it?

Floyd was lineal since 2006 after beating Baldomir.

After he returned from his hiatus Mosley/Cotto/Margarito were all at the top of the WW clan with Mosley as the recognized leader after destroying Margarito.

Floyd breezed by Shane in what was the clear lineal fight, in possibly our generation at WW so far.

....so in conclusion.... If you already held Floyd as lineal then he still IS.
....and if there was any doubt as to whether it was really him or Shane... then you still have your answer because Floyd beat Shane.

I just don't see how you would conclude that Pac vs Shane was for lineal especially when Pac fought 3 guys in a row who were a combined 0-2-1 before facing him. And even though he beat Cotto handily... Cotto was FAR from lineal. Shane brought no clout into his fight with Pacman except his name at that point...

It's vacant since he "retired" after Hatton.

even if you would insist that he left the lineal title behind when he "retired"

...he picked it back up by beating Mosley for the undisputed Lineage.

either way... Floyd is the man.

That being said... it doesn't stand for much because we all know the Pacquiao fight stands for much more than a simple lineage. The Floyd vs Pac fight is about All-time implications and records of all sorts and the winner would have to be given atleast some consideration to be the GOAT...

I know how it sounds but consider this.... COMBINED BOTH MEN HAVE:

                      1. 17 world titles
                      2. 33-1-2 in title fights
                      3. 28 former/current champs defeated
                      4. a completely stuuuuupid 15,050,000+ total PPV buys
                      5. 37+ premium cable appearances
