  • Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez To Exercise Immediate Shot at Chavez Jr.

BoxingScene.com has been advised by promoter Lou DiBella that Sergio Martinez (47-2-2, 26KOs) will exercise his right, as the WBC's Emeritus champion at 160, to secure an immediate shot at the sanctioning organization's new middleweight champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (43-0-1, 30KOs). Martinez sat ringside on Saturday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles, and watched Chavez decision Sebastian Zbik to win the WBC crown. Martinez had advised BoxingScene several weeks ago that he was going to push for an immediate shot at the Chavez-Zbik winner.

I bet my account that Sulaiman, Arum, etc will find a way to wiggle out of this one.

    Poor Sergio.

Yeah, I don't think this fight will happen. At least not in the near future.

Sergio would obviously beat JCCjr easily though.

I'm 100% positive you are right. There is no way this fight happens before Martinez turns 40. It'll probably be Rubio or Cotto next for Chavez.

This fight is a waste of time. I'd rather see Sergio fight a world-class opponent. I wouldn't be mad at Sergio for taking this fight though, considering he's had a very good run recently and deserves an easy fight.

Cotto will get the first crack, or at least Arum will try to push for him to. I'm sure Martinez will get his hands on Chavez in Chavez' next 3 fights, but it won't be right away. Now that he finally has a belt, Arum will try to feed him an opponent or 2.
