I'm 39 years old and came up in the Roy Jones era. I still remember when he fought back in 92 or 93 on the USA station Tuesday Night Fights. I was in love with his style. My favorite fighter, Sugar Ray Leonard, was on his way out. There was no one else out there that could fight and entertain at the same time until Roy came along. In some ways, he was a better entertainer in the ring than Ray.I was amazed at his hand and foot speed.He was so dominant over his opponents. Then...I started to notice the quality of his opponents. It was bum after bum after bum.I remember Larry Merchant saying on the air after Roy beat up the postman, "So what". It started to get somewhat embarressing to watch Roy beat up some of these guys. I don't know how they even managed to get to sign a contract to fight on that level. It made me turn on Roy. I started looking at him as a bully.He was no longer a great fighter to me, but a fraud who knew how to pick the right opponents to "LOOK GREAT". I've been telling people over the last 12 years that this would eventually happen.But now that it has,I feel really bad for him.I look back and now respect the past accomplishments. I look back at him in his prime and have fallen back in love with the hand and foot speed. I'm just hoping that someone in his life can convince him to walk away from the sport. Now i realize how big he was for boxing.Although its my personal opinion that he was not a great fighter.But Roy jones Jr is the greatest ring entertainer and showman that ever fought. And because this sport can be so brutal, that makes him legendary all by itself!

At 175 Roy pretty much cleaned out the division. He had dominating wins over Toney who was coming off two wins over Mike McCallum and knocked out Michael Nunn...He beat Bernard Hopkins, Montell Griffin who beat James Toney (twice) and was undefeated when Roy knocked him out with 1 shot...Virgil Hill was not a shot fighter. Roy knocked him out with a body shot. Reggie Johnson was WBC middleweight champion and Roy took him apart. Merquis Sosa was a very good fighter who lost a split decision to James Toney...Sosa tried that Glen Johnson charging style when he fought Roy in 1996 and Roy knocked him out in round 2.

Vinny Pazienza was a former champion. Roy destroyed him. Clinton Woods, Julio Gonzales, lou del valle, Eric Harding

Eric Lucas after Roy destroyed him later became WBC Super Middleweight Champion. John Ruiz wasn't Lennoz Lewis, but he was one of the champions and coming off beating Evander Holyfield. Roy moved up and dominated him. You want to say why didnt Roy at 5-11, 195 take on Lewis who was 6-5 250....How dumb would that be? If thats the case then Marvin Hagler should have moved up to 175 and taken on Michael Spinks.

I think there are fans who are not knowledgeable of the 168 and 175 pound division and just assume Roy fought nobody. You assume this because he beat them so easy.

People forget Montell Griffin beat James Toney (twice) and was undefeated. Roy put him to sleep in the first round. Reggie Johnson was WBC middleweight champion and Roy dominated him.

He took on 1 and 2 contenders and destroyed them to the point where there was nobody left to fight.

If Roy isnt great than neither was Ray Leonard who let Camacho knock him out

Roy Jones Jr. doesn't want to leave the sport, it would probably feel to him the same as leaving the woman you love.

At least Roy Jones Jr will be remembered as a fighter and not a ducker like Floyd Jr.

As a once per era talent, Jones was accused over the years of ducking his most serious opposition or not testing himself against the best consistently.

They've been saying this about Jones practically forever. But who exactly didn't he fight who he was supposed to fight back when he was in his prime? Dariusz Michalczewski? Probably the only guy i can think of. He pretty much bulldozed through just about everybody from the 90's in the weight classes he fought in, who either held titles, or were title contenders.

Somebody please correct me if i'm wrong.

In other words, he was seen by many as having great natural ability, but not the heart of a true fighter. Sadly, after two crushing knockout defeats that should have led him into retirement, he has shown that in his chest beats the heart of a warrior

Also, why is it that a guy has to get his head beat in or be in some all-out slugfest in order to be considered a "warrior" in the eyes of some so-called boxing "fans", as opposed to thoroughly outclassing your opponent? Too much Rocky perhaps?

So sad to see. I support Roy, he's my favorite fighter ever, but I really hope he stops fighting.

ATG post. the critics and the public clearly must've forgot. it was disgusting how they treated roy back in the day and to a certain extent today. everyone was amazed at what he did in the ring but at the end of day, he never got his just dues.
