I'm pretty sure his close friends and family members have told him several times since 2004 that he should retire. Roy doesn't listen to anyone but himself.

Has any ATG fighter ever gone out as poorly as Roy Jones?

Did anyone ever let it get that bad?

I didn’t start to follow Roy’s career until near the end of his prime. I was amazed at his speed, his boxing ability, his showmanship and how he totally dominated his opponents. I looked up his earlier fights and was even more impressed. I considered him (and still do) a modern day Ali. The way he dominated present, former and future world champions, rarely losing a round in the process was amazing to watch.
When Roy came down from heavyweight and beat Tarver, replicating the historical feat of Bob Fitzsimmons it looked like his physical abilities had diminished and it would have been a good time to retire but as the warrior Roy is he decided to fight Tarver a second time. We all know what happened in the second Tarver fight and against Glen Johnson and that took away Roy’s aura of invincibility forever, still I don’t think it damaged his legacy much. The weight drain from moving down from heavyweight is a plausible explanation for Roy’s clearly lowered ability to withstand a punch and his bad stamina. After the Tarver and Johnson fights he was clearly never the same. Still Jones fought on and took on Tarver a third time and in a few rounds he looked like the old Roy before losing a clear decision to Tarver. Roy went on to have a few victory’s against average opposition before losing again to Calzaghe in a fight were he showed that he had lost much of his footwork, timing, reflexes and speed. In this diminished state Roy was still able to put down and hurt Calzaghe in the first round and fought on for twelve rounds like a warrior landing some big punches in the sixth round before getting a cut that heavily impaired his vision for the later half of the fight. In losing against Calzaghe Roy showed heart and a will to fight just as he did in the first Tarver fight and by wanting to take on Tarver a second and third time. I don’t see how these loses hurt Roy’s legacy as he was so clearly long past his prime. In a way these fights were good for showing Roy’s heart and determination which he didn’t need to show in his prime because of his superhuman abilities. The only way they can take away from Roy’s legacy is if you believe he was any way near his prime and not an aged and diminished version of his former self. The same goes for his loses against Green (with his illegal wraps) and Lebedev, sad and unnecessary fights which should never have happened. Now as Roy’s career possibly has reached its end what I will remember is an all time great fighter, a brilliant entertainer that had a deep love for the sport of boxing. What he accomplished in the ring will never be forgotten and probably never replicated. Roy at his best was so good that it’s a compliment to good fighters like Ward and Gamboa too say that they sometimes manage to look like poor versions of Roy Jones. That says something of how great Roy truly was in his prime.

          Its funny how boxing works.

Roy took no punishment in his prime and made millions.

Now hes lost his millions and is taking serious punishment from guys he'd have humiliated in his prime.

                    RJJ was a bum blaster

toney and 1-1 against bhop are really his only decent wins. I guess you could wing it and say montell was a good win too but he was C level at best.

See the 2 warriors in my avatar? Roy flat out ducked both of them.

Probably the only guy i can think of. He pretty much bulldozed through just about everybody from the 90's in the weight classes he fought in, who either held titles, or were title contenders.

Somebody please correct me if i'm wrong.
I know that Nigel Benn wanted to fight him but Jones was asking for a silly amount of money. And a young Joe Calzaghe also wanted to fight him and it was the same problem, Money. I'm a big Nigel Benn fan but I know he would have had a lot of trouble with a prime Jones but I think a young Calzaghe would have gave him a good fight. Unfortunately we will never know for sure.
