Comments Thread For: Cotto: No Debate, Gomez The Best PR Boxer of All-Time

WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto says there is no debate on who the best Puerto Rican boxer is of all-time. Cotto views Wilfredo Gomez, a former WBC super bantamweight and featherweight champion, as the best Puerto Rican boxer to ever put on the gloves. Gomez also held the WBA super featherweight title. Recently there had been a debate on the best Puerto Rican fighter of all-time, with Gomez being named among a short list of boxers. The others were Wilfred Benitez, Carlos Ortiz and Felix Trinidad.

I would probably agree with Cotto that Gomez is #1.

        I like Ortiz better, though.

& he's RIGHT!!! Besides Gomez being a 3 division world champ(jr feather, feather & jr lightweight)he also has the record for the most defenses at jr featherweight(122lbs)with 17 successful defenses & ALL BY KO!!! Gomez ended with a record of 44-3-1-42KO's & 23 of those fights were world title fights & his record in word championship fights was 20-3-18KO's!! & Gomez has the record for the longest uninterrupted title reign at jr featherweight(5 years, 10 months) Gomez was also a Amateur World Champion winning Gold in Havana, Cuba(1974) & winning ALL the fights by KO!!He KO'd 3 fighters in 2 rounds & 1 in 1 round!! Among them was the favorite to win the Gold in his weight class, Cuban amateur champion Luis Jorge Romero...He's DEFINITELY the best Puerto Rican fighter of all time!! & 2 of his 3 losses came to Hall of Famers Salvador Sanchez & Azumah Nelson..The other was to Panamanian Alfredo Layne at just about the end of Gomez's career..It's gonna be REAL hard for ANY other Boricua fighter to at least MATCH those credentials, never mind trying to TOP them!!!

A few weeks ago(before the Juanma/Salido fight) arrogant swollen headed Juanma would have said he was the best ever!! & he actually believed it, until Salido gave him a reality check!!

Like I've always said, Manny wouldn't have gotten past Joltin Jeff Chandler@118 let lone Gomez@122 and Floyd would've had a tough time getting pass Camacho@135 but Pryor would've stopped the buck@140.
