Nobody really knows exactly what happened in the Valero case, speculate yes, but it's speculation from what you read/hear about in the media and so on. Obviously the guy was really messed up in his head, and probably didn't know what he was doing, and was also out of his mind on drugs/alcohol.
As provious posters pointed out, all sympathy should be with the children and rest of the Valero family left behind, and that's really it.
