If Floyd stayed active Pacquiao wouldn't be the star that he is as there would have been no reason for him to move up in weight and fight De La Hoya. I supposed he would have knocked Hatton's ass out cold at 140lb.

Anyway the main point is Floyd was an inactive fighter long before Pacquiao became a threat to him.

"Few years"? Try just over 18 months. Floyd was "retired" when Pac emerged as a serious rival (the De La Hoya fight) and didn't re-emerge 'til deep into the following year.

Meaning, no, I think he would have been a pretty much annual (you may call it part-time) fighter, anyway.

nahh. they're completely different fighters. pac was making a name when floyd was still around. it's not like mayweather himself was a huge star back then pre-dlh fight. pbf's style will always cater to a specific type of fans as opposed to boxers like tyson and now pac. floyd has nothing to do at all with pac's rise to stardom.

I didn't say Floyd had anything to do with Pacquiao's rise to stardom.

The fact of the matter is fighters need a moment that pushes them into superstar status, for Pacquiao that was his fight against De La Hoya. I don't even see how this point can be disputed, his body of work was far more impressive in the lower weight division, collecting wins against the likes of Morales, Barrrera and Marquez yet his recent work overshadows those accomplishments in terms of recognition.

When Floyd retired he got the fight that gave him the push necessary and all eyes were on him.

Yes Mayweather would still be fighting second tier welterweights and lighter fighters.
