Devon Alexander, for all his sins; when that guy beat Urango, it meant something. Because Urango had done things at the weight-class they both campaign in. And, not that stoppages are the be-all and end-all when comparing performances, but Alexander fought a much more impressive fight overall.
That doesn't make Berto look good, frankly.
Really, Collazo is all Berto has in 3 years. He gets just a bare modicum of kudos for Quintana in the state that guy was in. Collazo. That's it. Everything else is dubious.
It's not like the division is teeming with options. But, goodness, go out of your way to make something happen and don't just be content for your management to eschew any stern tests outside of the interchangeable #1 and #2 P4P.
Thing is, Urango tagged Alexander alot, managed to win at least 4 rounds, was actually in it and coming on strong, where as Berto dominated him from the getgo and hardly got hit, fight bored me though.
What I found impressive about Alexander in that fight is that despite getting hit with some vicious looking right hooks, he kept his composure and at least stopped the guy. Still in that fight alone I managed to spot all his weaknesses. Anyway, an argument can be made that Berto was more impressive, that's where I'm getting at.
This is why I keep wondering if somebody knows something about Victor that we can't see. Like they know he's going to magically grow some intangibles at welterweight or something.
But, looking at it, GBP don't have that many glamor options for Vic at 140 with the current set of peers and titlists. So I guess they figured it was now or never and decided to risk whatever stock he has left on this one, because the matchup is kind of an exciting prospect on paper.
Ortiz is so dumb, though, that I don't think he's really capable of fully comprehending how much rides on this and I'm thinking that the closest he'll get to rising to the occasion is mean-mugging at pressers.
I don't think much of Berto, but I expect him to kick Ortiz' ass and it won't be a matter of who's bigger, but just that he's more of a fighter than Ortiz. I only see Ortiz winning if something he throws catches Berto just right and by surprise (either cold or when Berto is running things) and hurts him enough for Ortiz to force a stoppage. Which would be earth-shatteringly embarrassing for Berto.
Damn that's cold, I think he realizes whats at stake though, I'm certain, we'll see.
