when you've been ontop awhile, you fight big names, it's never enough, not unless they are peaked and coming off a big win
if your an average contender, you can fight an unproven bum, beat him and get praise beyond belief
when sergio becomes more widely considered p4p #1, after 1 or 2 fights he will be considered to be fighting bums and cherrypicks, cuz the guys he's fighting aren't number 2 or 3 p4p and are'nt prime, undefeated beasts
it happens to EVERY p4p #1 fighterComment

You can make a case for him being number one quite easily, actually. Before I state the reasons, I'll say I personally don't have him as best pound-for-pound, but that's besides the point.
Consensus is Pacquiao and Floyd as the top two by almost everyone. Interchangeable depending on the severity of denial in Mayweather fans, I guess.
Why should Sergio surpass Floyd? Same reason anyone else will these days. Activity. Against good opposition. He beat the undisputed middleweight champion and blitzed Williams who was making waves in the rankings.
Why should Sergio surpass Pacquiao? Personally, I don't think he should, but there's an unhealthy majority of people who **** on the opposition of practically every single Pacquiao fight, or cry conspiracy, weight-drain, Et cetera. So if that's how they feel, they would put Martinez above him.
Like I said, I can see how certain people would elevate him above either. Personally, I have Martinez sandwiched between the two.
