Its not Hopkins. The Hopkins fight was not important when it happened. Its between Virgil Hill and James Toney for me. The KO 4 of Virgil Hill gave Jones legitmicy vs Michalczewski. As Darius went the distance with him and did not exactly shut him out. And it was the fight right after Darius beat Virgil.

I agree with this and a win against Taver coming up would help re-define his career which is needed after the KOs in his last 2 fights.

The fight vs Toney though really made Jones a star though, since Toney was the p4p #1 at teh time. However Toney was in bad condition in that fight, and the style in which JOnes won was to me not overrly impressive regardless that he may have won 10 or 11 rounds.

The Hopkins win was very important in retrospect, because Hopkins went undefeated for 10 years thereafter.

Hill was coming off a loss when Jones beat him.

But that fight wasn't a big fight. His biggest win was against the fat out of shape Toney.

Because it didn't have notiriety at the time doesn't mean anything.

Hopkins didn't lose for 10 years after that. It was two all time great fighters going at it early in their careers.

Also, it's not Jones fault Toney came in soft, nor does that excuse Toney from getting shut out 120-107.

No one has ever come close to doing that to Toney before or since.

I really hate the Jones Toney fight. Jones won probably every round, but it seems like he went the whole fight without landing a damaging punch. Jones just has the perfect style for Toney, especially an out of shape of Toney. If Toney was on his game he might have been able to nail Jones with some devastating counters, but Jones did not leave much opportunity even for the most skilled counterpuncher in that fight, he used his footspeed, ringgeneralship, reach, and ability to pockshot successfully from the outside.
