    When Shane fought Marg, I didn't consider it to be for the lineal title for the same reasons The Ring's ratings panel voted against it - see here.
    As far as I'm concerned when Cotto and Margarito fought the rankings where as so;

    Cotto
    Williams
    Margarito

    However, Williams had a fight signed at 154 before Cotto and Margarito fought and hasn't returned since. Thus in essence meaning the #1 fought the #2 for the Lineage.

    To which Margarito won. To which Shane won.

      That short spell is the only time he has been considered #1 in a respective weight class.
      by default or not he was still #1, He had a win over 3 top 10 WW at the time. I dont even think anyone in the top 10 at the time had more than a win over a top 10.

          When Mosley fought Marg, Cotto was ranked #2. Mosley was ranked #3.

              The point is he has never been Lineal Champion, though.

              However I agree with you default or not being considered #1 even though brief is still a good feat.

              I just don't think it's enough to be considered a HOF'er personally.

              Yes, that would mean Mayweather has it now.

                He was only ranked #1 for one fight. That's a hell of a short time to be ranked #1.

                Most consider Mayweather to be the current lineal champ. Some, including The Ring, still consider the lineal title to be vacant.

                  But Margarito and Cotto just fought for the Lineage as with Paul Williams vacating to go to Jr Middleweight they were the #1 and #2.

                  Thus making Margarito the Lineal Champion when he fought Shane.

                      Oh sorry, I see what you mean. But Williams did not plan to move to Jr Middleweight, he only signed that fight at Jr Middleweight because he couldn't get a meaningful fight at Welterweight at the time. He had every intention of fighting at Welterweight again. In September that year he tried to make a fight with Clottey but HBO refused to fund it. He also tried to get fights with several other Welters around then but only Clottey was interested. Then Williams offered Margarito $4 million to fight him in January 2010, but Marg turned it down in order to fight Mosley for $2.6 million instead, which was a clear duck. So I don't consider Williams really left the division until after Jan 2010 - and certainly not as early as the Cotto-Marg fight.
