He also tried to get fights with several other Welters around then but only Clottey was interested. Then Williams offered Margarito $4 million to fight him in January 2010, but Marg turned it down in order to fight Mosley for $2.6 million instead, which was a clear duck. So I don't consider Williams really left the division until after Jan 2010 - and certainly not as early as the Cotto-Marg fight.
I agree he wanted a fight there but the fact is he didn't and in he was fighting outside of 147 when Margarito and Cotto were signed to fight.

The fact he hasn't fought there since tells us that those 2 were THE best fighters at the time they fought. If I didn't consider it for the Lineage then (which I did as Williams was fighting at Jr Middleweight) I certainly would now as the 2 outright best fighters left in the division fought each other to see who THE best fighter was.

I consider Margarito the Lineal Champ after he beat Cotto and Mosley the Lineal Champ after he beat Margarito.

By that argument Hatton lost his lineal title as soon as he fought Collazo, but I don't see it that way and nor do most boxing experts.

Yes, to a degree the IBHOF is partially a popularity contest.

This thread is about 'who would make it into the HOF', not 'which fighters out of this list are better than the worst guy in the HOF'.

            just being realistic.

Not really because Paul Williams wasn't the Lineal Champion like Hatton was.

And whilst Hatton was at 147 the #1 and #2 fighters left weren't fighting each other.

Maybe, but the point is that most boxing experts don't remove anyone from the rankings of a division if they take a single fight in another division and announce that they don't plan to remain at the other weight. They never have done and never will.

Almost everyone still considered Williams to be the #2 ranked Welterweight when Cotto and Marg fought. All the independent rankings still had Williams ranked at #2 at that time.

And if the top two Jr Welterweights other than Hatton had fought while Hatton was fighting Collazo, I don't think anyone who matters would have regarded Hatton's lineal title as having been vacated at that time.

But the fact is Williams didn't return. So although I and others considered it for the linege then on the fact Williams moved up probably for an extended stay even if you didn't then the fact is in hindsight they were the best 2 fighters in the division.

That's different though because Hatton was the Lineal Champion. Having his Lineage stripped because he has brefily left the division is unreasonable, Hatton actually did return to 140 aswell which helps. Had Williams been the Lineal champion when he moved up oringinally I wouldn't consider Margarito Vs Cotto for the Lineage. But, he wasn't.
