It looks good on paper. But is it good enough?
In those 3 weight classes not once has been considered the best in the world here. All 3 are paper titles.Roger Mayweather fought across 4 divisions and was a title holder in 3 of them. Hell, Roger Mayweather was the Lineal Champion at 130 for a spell. He also took on all comers, tougher fights than Cotto has taken on.
And he is flat out not a HOF'er. Atleast for his boxing career alone anyway.
My point is the title '3 division champ' isn't always enough.
And I don't believe what Cotto has achieved is enough.Comment

When he fought Margarito for the Lineage he lost.
That short spell is the only time he has been considered #1 in a respective weight class.Comment

It's not a popularity contest, but McGuigan got in solely because of the massive and quite unique impact he had on the sport outside the ring - that's just a fact. What he did in the ring had nothing to do with his HoF place. And it's massively belittling the impact he had on the sport to just call it popularity - the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland stopped fighting each other whenever he fought and both communities supported him. No one else has ever had that effect on them. And he also completely transformed the public's attitude to boxing in the rest of the UK as well. His impact in the UK at that time was comparable to Ali's impact in the US or Pacquiao's impact in the Philippines. And that's why he got in.Last edited by Dave Rado; 03-11-2011, 07:45 PM.Comment

De La Hoya Vs Vargas was considered for The Ring title if I remember correctly.
Tszyu won the The Ring title Vs Mitchell but that wasn't for the Lineage as Zab was considered #2 and Mitchell #3.
When he beat Zab he was considered the Lineal Champion and undisputed Jr WW Champion.
But good post though. People tend to think The Ring Title means Lineage but thats not always the case.
It's a shame that there's no more prominent reference of linearity. Cyberboxingzone is good but it's a horribly designed website, and it's a couple of years out of date, and most people don't know about it anyway.Comment

I agree with The Ring and disagree with you on that one, even though cyberboxingzone agrees with you.
When Shane fought Marg, I didn't consider it to be for the lineal title for the same reasons The Ring's ratings panel voted against it - see here.Comment

Cyberboxingzone? I've never heard of that. I'll take a look.
I don't really know of any sites I just try and go off memory. The majority of fighters I have followed throughout my life I have noted down the majority where their opponet was ranked at the time so I just refer to that.Comment
