I see what u mean, but to compare him to Berto doesn't work cause Berto did fight a legitimate RANKED welterweight(Miguel Rodriguez) for the title & has defended against fighters such as Collazo & Quintana who are exchamps & were ranked & ligimate welters & the fighter from the lower weight class(140lbs) that he defended against was Urango who was a Legitimate 2 time World champ & the current IBF champ at the time..They weren't unranked lowerweight class TOMATO CANS!!
& ¿Give the Kid a break? ¿Needs time to develop? I've been watching Canelo since 2008(against Larry Mosley & that's like 15 or 16 fights ago) & I've been keeping up watching online the fights that were only televised in Mexico threw Televisa & since then it's been the same story, he's young, he's gonna be the next Mexican star & he's still learning.. But since then Canelo has been the same EXACT fighter, he hasn't changed or improved 1 bit!!! According to the breif biography they did on HBO Canelo has been involved in boxing since he was a little kid & has been a pro for over 5 years & already has 37 fights & he claims it should be like 45 cause there are some fights he says haven't been registered(who knows where those fights took place & against who) So ¿How long is it gonna take Canelo to learn something new or to improve? He either has the worst case of B.A.D.D(Boxing Attention Deficit Disorder) or should just change or hire another trainer to see if he does better...Or maybe he just needs to fight Real legitimate top 10 ranked jr middleweight fighters to see if he learns something, cause the 37 fights that are registered are against Tomato Cans, blown up fighters from lower weight categories & old dehydrated has bin's...Try to find a legitimate top 10 or 15 ranked welter or jr middleweight on Canelo's record, your not cause there ain't NONE!! & I'm not justifying Hatton fighting for the title either cause he's another 1 that has a record full of tomato cans..Neither 1 of them deserved to fight for a world title!!
Look at fighters like Pipino cuevas-started fighting at the age of 14 & 4 years at 18 & 22 fights later won a World Championship & was fighting top of the line fighters, Wilfredo Benitez-started fighting at 14 & 3 years later at 17 & 26 fights later won a world title & was also fighting top of the line fighters & Juan Diaz started at 16 & 3 years later at 19 & 21 fights later won a world title & what this article doesn't say is that Diaz won the vacant tile from a legitimate ranked lightweight & his 1st few defenses were against legitimate ranked lightweights, they weren't the elite of the division, but they were ranked & from the same division... & Wilfredo Vazquez jr NEVER had an amateur career & started learning as a pro & on his 19th fight fought & won a world title(Against the #2 contender) & has already defended against the #1 contender...Canelo has been called the next Mexican Wonder & by looking at him, he seems like the next Mexican DUD!!!
It's not about how many fights you've had, it's about the level of competition you have faced, and he hasn't even fought a genuine contender as yet.
I just see Canelo as a kid.
A kid who is being bought on very slowly, and being given time to develop.
Playtimes over, he needs to dump that title and get back on track.
He could have another 8-9 fights, and still have a crack at a genuine champion before his 23rd birthday.
I don't see what the rush is. Boxing is a learning curve, we all develop differently, and the jury is still out on Canelo because he is so young.
But good point that he needs to start stepping up his opposition. He should work toward targeting someone like Margarito in 2-3 fights, then, like you said, focus solely on top 10-15 guys.
Good post man.Comment

Many flaws and over hyped?
The kid is 20 years old, he's saying that he's not ready for the big fights yet, what's wrong with that?
An article making fun of his looks by the main page writers? what is that? Thought of Wendy's when I saw him? classy!
It just goes to show that anyone can write an article about anything, opinions make message boards but that's just childish and not very sophisticated, is there any other 20 year olds that show promise like Canelo does?
He doesn't fit the typical Mexican fighters looks or fighting style but never underestimate the heart of a Mexican fighter, I don't care where you're from or if you like or dislike Mexican boxers, every time one is in the ring he's going to give you his all and that will never change, are we excited for him? of course we are! we're exited for all of our fighters, we're stoked for Rios too! what's wrong with him?
Canelo hasn't even claimed that hes' ready for top competition, he said he needs a couple more fights until he's ready, the reason people would want to discredit his demeanor and personality is beyond me
The kid is humble, hard worker, generous and loves boxing
Is he over hyped? maybe, but we'll see what he amounts to, he's only 20 years old!!!Comment

That fact alone refutes most of the criticism directed toward Canelo.Comment
