He gives all fighters a lil slack. You cant throw a backwards elbow and get away with it whether it lands or not. Thats called keeping control of a fight. If you wanna throw an elbow do it the right way and slip it in behind a punch like Tyson. These young guys just cheat wrong.LOL. Either way Maidana had the chance to finish Khan and he didnt have the discipline to calm down and keep his punching distance. Not Joe's fault. Do you know how crazy a Maidana fight would be without a ref being significantly involved?
What you got against Cortez? I like him.

cortez used to be alright before his whole trying to become a celebrity with his " im fair but firm " bit, that just puts him in the picture. i have my gripes about the guy, he's most certainly has been getting worse as time goes on. i will say though that he did tell acosta to stop holding before it was in the 12th round, which i said that as soon as acosta stops holding he gets grinded out.
but that is neither here or there, cortez's recent body of work is marred with bad calls, missed calls, and bad corrections for a bad call to make up for a previous one.
thats the thing about the " im fair but firm " shtick, because if he feels any pressure of a bad call or non call, then he goes against it by calling another bad call, something gets over sensitized and a fighter gets penalized. just watch soto vs lorenzo fight, and i was calling shenanigans on cortez years before that **** job.....
but it stems from his trying to be famous bit........Comment

Hes a shit ref, very inconsistent, his display in the hatton/mayweather fight was terrible,he showed real favouritism in that one,im not saying the outcome would have been any different, but i dont think ive seen such bad reffing in a world title fight (apart from when sven ottke fought of course)Comment

The recent hate comes from his lack of consistency. Many believe he's a firm player of favorites. Check it out:
Calzaghe-Hopkins: Cortez lets Bernard hold and work inside all night long. (Favors the American)
4 months later
Hatton-Mayweather: Cortez constantly breaks them up any chance he gets, killing Hattons only shot at getting any work done via inside fighting. (Favors the American)
Did his actions change the possible outcomes? That's for you to decide. But the evidence of him playing favorites is clearly there in my opinion.Comment

All I remember was him calling one of the worst calls that I've ever seen in a world title fight, I don't dislike him but that was a damn awful decision:
