Jack Johnson, 37 years old, 6" shorter, fat, out of shape, battered him all over the ring for 25 rounds but gave out in the 26th. It was arranged as a 45 rd fight, in other words a fight to a finish and there was NO WAY anyone was going to let Johnson win.

It's all in the records and reports, as well as many books, even films.
He literally killed a man with an uppercut. Didn't punch his weight?

I think its at least even money.

I don't think Dempsey would have a shot against Vitali so I won't ask about him.
Can you upload some youtube vids of Dempsey? I haven't seen enough of him to make an informed decision..

Willard was not that good of a win for Dempsey. He was coming off a two year long layoff.

the real giant that Dempsey destroyed and has an impressive win was over Fulton, who was about 6'7 and a top fighter.

besides, a fat former middleweight was a top 3 fighter at one point at HW only a few years ago.

small and unathletic? yea, HW James Toney fits that bill. didnt stop him from being a top fighter in the division.

old time fighters CAN be overrated by some. but sometimes photos of them dont do justice to how athletic they were in the first place. bad quality can be very misleading. heres an example:

they dont appear very athletic, do they? but when you watch it in HD...

you can see their muslce definition much more clearly, and they look in very good shape now, dont they?

also, how you perform in track means very little in boxing terms. do you really think sprinters could do anything in boxing?

The guy had been badly injured in his previous fight and was teetering on ther grave/I think he also had a bad head accident.

I'm not even sure if this is true anyway.

Some of those old timers were fighting 25 round fights and sometimes more. The film might not be hbo HD quality but its good enough to see that these guys weren't the weaklings everyone tries to make them out to be.

its true Corre Sanders, who many considered out of shape and not a great athlete ran a 10.7 100 m dash while in high school. A 17 year old Corrie Sanders would have been the fastest man on earth back then. And depending on the age of the old timey fight, sometimes a round ended with a knock down, sometimes they didnt have 3 minute rounds and often they stood in a ring and did stand up wresting (jack johnson).

Sam was WBO #3, WBC #3, WBA #4 and IBF #5 before he fought Wlad.

And Peter was ahead of Wlad in the Ring rankings:

How can people judge a fighter based on a handful of black and white clips? I mean there are guys posting on BoxingScene that don't have a clue about pre-2007 boxing, and you made a poll regarding a fighter that fought in the '10s and '20s?
