Arum is a scumbag. Gonna be funny when chinny ass Gamboa gets knocked out by some bottom feeder. Neither guy is that elite that they can't lose and I hope it backfires big time. It's just like Angulo/Kirkland, you're building up and praying everything falls into place but chances are it won't. Building fighters through cupcakes matchups doesn't increase a fighters popularity. Putting them in tough matchups that are entertaining does. No one cares about Gamboa now and no one will care about him when he's 25-0. Get a clue and die.

How did you build your biggest star Bob? Did you feed Pacquaio bottom feeders or did you match him with legends like MAB, Erik Morales, and JMM? Pacquaio got to where he was in popularity due to his entertaining fights with great fighters. Good luck making Gamboa a star by fighting the Orlando Salidos of the world.Comment

pac was picked off twice, or ko'd twice and look were he is today. people need to stop with the "this fight needs to happen before one of them lose" nonsense. bradley and alexander were both undefeated, what did that do to help their so called "superfight"? nothing.Comment

the fight will lose some luster. one of them, sooner or later will get picked off.i hope not but they juanma keeps going down and gamboa keeping his guard low when he's tired or things not going his way sooner or later will lose then its all out the windows. arum is too patient and something will go wrong.Comment

There is a difference here though. It took Pacquiao many years to have people overlook those two losses and they happened way early in his career. These guys have had almost 20 fights each against a couple solid top 10 fighters and both have belts. If one of them loses now then the demand diminishes big time. Who would have clamored for Bradley vs. Alexander if Alexander would have lost to Kotelnik, a guy Amir Khan beat easily? Alexander would have fought Kotelnik again and Bradley would have went on to someone else and the talk of them two fighting each other would have came to a halt for the time being. I agree with Flint, the longer you wait (especially with two guys who have looked vulnerable or less than impressive in the past), one of them just might lose...Comment

Top Rank's CEO, Bob Arum, advised BoxingScene.com that a featherweight unification between WBA/IBF champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (19-0, 15KOs), and WBO champion Juan Manuel Lopez (30-0, 27KOs), will only happen when the public demand has reached a certain level. Arum tells BoxingScene that he won't allow Lopez-Gamboa to end up like the recent 140-pound unification between unbeatens Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley.
1) After Alexander's poor performance against Kotelnik, (and certainly after the Devon/Bradley fight), it's kinda obvious that Devon has peaked (under Cunningham's instruction anyway). Trying to build this fight up for later might have seen Alexander lose or give more poor performances against elite opposition. Juanma has shown weaknesses, but he has always overcome his weaknesses and has never been in a boring fight.
2) Alexander and Timmah want the big bucks. HBO should not give them easy fights if they want the big money or if they want to fight on HBO. Having said that, Devon and Timmah's promoters don't have the ability (Shaw) or the will (King) to build them up the way Arum is building up Juanma and Gamboa.
3) Alexander and Timmmeh want their shots at Pac and Wifebeater... and staging the unification gets them there sooner rather than later. while at 126 lbs, Juanma is the cashcow at that weight and Gamboa is waiting for his shot at Juanma.
4) Devon and Timmmmmmmmmmah aren't promoted by the same promoter, as Juanma and Gamboa are promoted by Arum. So it's harder to build up that fight since each promoter has their own agenda.
Therefore, Alexander/TIMmah happened when it should've happened. the only complaint is that this fight should've been in St. Louis because it deserved a bigger crowd.Comment
