Another desired tool when going up against Floyd, is the ability to switch gears from pressuring to counter-punching. Floyd is a defensive specialist, but his offense isn't on the same level. Don't get me wrong, he has a varied offensive arsenal, but he's at his absolute best when countering and reacting. Allowing Floyd to be the aggressor will present numerous opportunities as he's more liable to get reckless with his combinations. Cotto had the most success either when he had Floyd up against the ropes, or when he allowed Floyd to lead and threw with him. Now obviously you need to have the speed/reflexes/reach/timing to do this effectively. However, Cotto got away with more than I thought he would, even with his limited physical gifts. Had Cotto been more athletically-gifted, Floyd would've gotten caught more often, and it would've probably stifled his offense too.

Great comment. Floyd won decisively, but he doesn't necessarily represent perfection. He's brilliant, but not perfect.

Oh yeah I forgot, that also when Floyd is on the ropes, his shell is exposed at times.

Floyd has great eyes and superior reflexes to anyone, and that has gotten him away with things.
The best way to have a shell is to angle it with a diagonal position and twist. When Floyd gets sent to the ropes, he squares up, and also it means he finds it hard to move and thus gets hit.

Everyone says Floyd has skills, and believe me he has, but I always repeated, like Pac, they rely on their athletic gifts. A slower guy can't do what Pac does and never can they do what Floyd does.

        Mayweather's power

I don't know how much Cotto rehydrated but I would say he was 160-162lbs on fight night. Floyd was around 148-150.

I was quite impressed with Floyd's power and how he rocked the stronger and much heavier Cotto when he sat down on his punches. He basically beat Cotto with the right hand.

10oz Grant pillows and still smacked Cotto around and busted him up. Especially in the 12th. Too bad he didn't go for the kill when he buckled Cotto badly.

Great win for Mayweather and a solid effort from a game and re-invented Cotto.

Yeah it looked like he was punching hard.

The shot he wobbled Cotto with in the 12th was a great shot.

Be physically big enough so that he can't hold his ground in the ring in addition with the jab. Someone like Khan may have a great jab, but he isn't strong enough to discourage >ayweather from doing his thing in the pocket.

When I saw Henry land his jab and some left hooks, I realised that Cotto will have success because he has a very strong jab that dropped Clottey etc.. I wasn't sure about his left hook, but it wasn't too bad.

The issue for Floyd if he faced Pac, Pac has a very strong left that dropped Shane and Cotto and if Floyd has lost a step, and Pac really did have cramps, then Pac hitting him hard anywhere is going to slow him down also.

                Styles make fights though.
Mayweather has never had problems with straight lefts.....
                It's the goddamn jab!
                You wanna know why?
Because Floyd is a Counter puncher that relies on timing and a hard jab disrupts his rhythm.

If you don't know the difference between a left jab and a left cross than you shouldn't be making a tread about "how to defeat Mayweather" .

Cotto mixed his punches up well and kept Mayweather guessing.
                Pacman on the other hand...
He telegraphs all of his punches, especially his left hand with that right jab.
And Pac tends to be repetitive and enable to adjust mid fight, something Mayweather does well

I said many times before this fight that it would be a tough for Mayweather and that Cotto is far worse style match up than what Pac is.

Other than that Pac is a southpaw, Pac is made for Mayweather.
A easily flustered opponent that leaves himself out of balance and out of position everytime he attacks, as well as having a inability to fight counter punchers(jmm x3)....

                You do the math

                  The fix is in!

I thought Mayweather won the fight. He sealed the deal in the 12th. The scorecards were a disgrace as usual. The scorecards have been disgusting in almost every fight in the last 6 years. The judges are taking money to protect the house fighter and or a bigger fight every fight. They don't even try to hide it anymore. It's the new WWF. Goldenboy is as bad as top rank.

Cotto could have dominated 11 and 12, dropped mayweather and only get a majority draw.
