They loved the craziness that he brought both inside and outside the ring.

The point is, you can't separate the two things, and the outside the ring part is a BIG reason people are still so in love with the Tyson myth.

When Tyson got into the ring, it was about a lot more than just boxing. Boxing was almost secondary at times. It was about him embodying a role that many people, even many who would never admit it, find very appealing.

Tyson without the out-of-the-ring antics of **** and assaults and crazy "I'll eat your babies" rants, wouldn't even show up on most casual fan's radar. He was probably made more famous by that more than anything else. As a boxer though, he proved to be good but not great, every time he stepped up to a great boxer (Lewis, Holyfield) he got KTFO. He can be excused for loosing to mediocre competition like Douglas, Williams, and McBride but not when the Klitschkos, who are still reigning today, are being crucified for loosing to much better competition in Sanders, Brewster, and Byrd. That's when the Tyson nut lickers need to be reminded that Tyson got KTFO by an obese journeyman in his prime, got owned by Holyfield and Lewis in between, and then quit against two journeymen in Williams and McBride at the tail-end of his career.
The Tyson fanatics tend to bracket all that bad stuff that happened to him out, because it doesn't fit the mythology.

The ultimate ****** super-thug can't lose to a fat Irish guy from Boston.

That's what I mean: there is the fantasy Mike Tyson and the real Mike Tyson.

They are not the same entity in many cases. I think Tyson himself would agree.

Exactly, it's the same people that say that Klitschkos don't have "personality". To me having a PhD and speaking 4 languages and being altruistic and polite is much more of a personality than being a rapist crazy thug. That's just me though, if you are into the whole mildly-******ed-rapist-drug-addict thing, by all means, have at it.

Did you say loose? How about quit without injury after trying to break his arm multiple times?

The real Mike Tyson wasn't that fearsome to most fighters, but he is a lot more fearsome to a guy off the street. While it is the other way around with the Klitschkos, most fighters are actually terrified of the Klitschkos much more so than any fighter I have ever seen, but to the average person on the street who doesn't have to step into the ring with them, they are nice guys who they wouldn't think twice about flipping off if they cut them off in traffic. That's the difference.

Are you for real? Tyson was shot and old and in his last fight vs McBride. A prime Tyson would have knocked McBride the **** out easy.

This would only be his saving grace if he McBride was some young top prospect, but he was a journeyman with 4 KO losses picked to make Tyson look good. Not to mention he quit against him, didn't even have the heart to fight on. Once again -that's the difference between the Tyson myth and the Tyson reality. Myth- unbeatable ****** thug that has everyone cowering in fear. Reality - good HW with serious mental problems who would fold when faced with someone who wasn't afraid of him.

                  just re-watched Chisora-Sexton 2...

Mind you, i will be pulling for Del Boy with everything I have as i do not like Wlad. That being said, Chisora is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY out of his league here. His only chance, his ONLY chance is to get himself in such good shape that he can throw punches constantly for 12 rounds and beat on Klit and make him quit. outside of that, not happening. the experience and talent gap is too wide. Sure, he has a punchers chance but not much of one. Derek will probably be an alphabet champion one day, just not that day.

                    I agree with you there.

Chisora is likely the lightest hitter that Wlad has been in with ever since he became a champion.

He's not a big-puncher for a heavyweight. He hit Sexton an awful lot and with everything he had. He was teeing off on him to be fair.

Not true, Byrd wasn't a big hitter and Chambers has a 50% KO ratio I think.
