ok , now i'll admit that in their 1st fight Roy didnt look all that well. BUT in their 2nd fight , he was ready. Look how sharp he looked up until the ko. Don't tell me going back from heavyweight affected him in the fight. Tarver caught him with a big counter left hand that he never saw coming .. end of the story. Roy was never the same afterwards.
Tarver RUINED Jones ..it wasnt the weight...

When Roy lost all that weight his reflexes went to shyt prime Roy would not have been caught by that lucky punchComment

Imagine if Roy had come into that first fight in better condition. He'd have won that decision in a much easier fashion, and a 2nd fight never would have happened. Who knows if Glen Johnson still would have gotten to him, but you could look at Roy's physique in that fight and see he wasn't in the same condition he was in his previous bouts. Moral of the story? Always prepare the best you can, and never sleep on anybody! lol.Comment

Where have you been? RJ has a legion of his fans making excuses and have repeated so often that it has become the accepted version of the story by the majority. Just like the cat that already posted.
When you talk about lucky punches, you know you've never been in the ring and don't know what you're talking about. Tarver legitimately KTFO a very good, close to prime RJ and all people can come with are excuses.Comment

Honestly, two things about that fight bother me.
Nothing to do with the fight itself, but how fans reacted to it. Jones was way past it, and was drained, because of moving down. Please. Jones met a guy who didn't fear him, who could counter and had some pop. Not to mention, had an underrated defense and a quality chin. It's as simple as that. Roy never faced anyone like that, other than Toney, who was a slob of a fighter at the weight class. It happens. Certain fighters just have your number. Tarver dialed Jones' up that night. Simple as that.
The other thing that bothers me is the argument that Jones got caught with a lucky punch. Truthfully, no punch is a lucky punch. Unless you close your eyes and hope it lands, then it's not lucky. You might be considered "lucky" that it hurt your man, but Tarver is a southpaw. It was his power hand that landed it was a counter shot coming from a counter-puncher. Nothing lucky about it.
The only luck involved is that Jones is lucky he didn't get hit with it more than once, because he was out of it for a while.Last edited by THe TRiNiTY; 12-21-2010, 02:19 AM.Comment

Jones was also 35 years old. His speed also made him great and I don't think he would have been standing there to get hit with that shot in his prime. Maybe he didn't respect Tarver but it definitely wasn't him at his very best, IMO.Comment
