In recent years we’ve seen young, undefeated fighters take the easy road on there journey to a world title. Some say there’s no such thing as an “easy road” to winning a recognized title belt, they say some are just blessed with fortunate routes. I beg to differ. Take Andre Berto for example.
2 years ago Floyd Mayweather Jr retired from the sport of boxing, forcing him to vacate his WBC strap. Berto, who was 21-0 at the time, being the #1 contender, fought Miguel Angel Rodriguez (29-3), with the winner of the bout being recognized as champion of the world. Berto went on to win the fight, but as they say, to be the best, you must beat the best. In other words, to be champion, you must beat the champion. Was Rodriguez champion? Would have Berto fought Floyd, the real champion, if Floyd didn’t retire? You be the judge on this one.
Now take Abner Mares for example, who is now at the same stage Berto was at 2 years ago. Mares, 21-0, will be fighting for the IBF title in mid 2011. This isn’t Mares’ first shot at the title as he duked it out with Yhonny Perez earlier this year in a fight in which many people had Abner winning, myself included. The fight was declared a draw, and as all hardcore boxing fans know, a draw is all you need to retain your belt when champion. Perez, who at the time was undefeated, was coming off a huge victory over Joseph Agbeko in 2009. Abner deserved the right to be called champion of the world.
After Berto “won” the title he fought Steve “2POUND” Forbes, who at the time had lost 3 of his previous 4 bouts. After Mares’ was robbed of winning his title, he entered Showtimes talented bantamweight tournament. In his first bout he was matched up with the dangerous, heavy handed Vic Darchinyan, further showing his desire to become champ.
Not only does Abner face tough competition, he fights them. He gives you your moneys worth. He’s not in there to hold, he’s not in there to hit and move, he’s not in there for the money, he’s in there to fight. And this is what in my opinion, seperates Abner Mares from the rest.

This is an article i just wrote, i plan on sending it out to a few major websites. Please give me your thoughts, thanks

Hey what happened to Martin Castillo? He was one of my favorite fighter once he took the lay off for his surgeries he came back and was not the same... I love his wars with Alex Munoz i miss his skills..

Nacho isn't as hands on as people think.

I'm not that guy but they haven't scheduled the date or location for the finals of the Showtime bantam tourney per Abner Mares as of yesterday.

We want it in LA. It should be in LA. I heard Showtime was thinking of April. Not official.
