Big Fights featuring Non-Americans should no longer be in America

Amir Khan can make better money fighting solely in the UK, but I suppose being fan friendly is more important to him. He's a good guy.Comment

Boxing is not entirely dead in the US.
Devon Alexander drew a crowd of 10k for his fight against Kotelnik and we all know Kotelnik is an unknown here in the US. The reason for this was because Devon was promoted properly. He showed up in St Luis Cardinals game to promote the fight, he went all over St. Luis promoting the fight. The key to drawing crowds is to get the fight out there, promote the fight. Put it on radio, *******, Twitter, Facebook, banners, do as many free interviews as you can, etc. Only few promoters put down money to promote their fighters..others don't put shit down and their fighters basically are unknown's even in their own hometown.Comment

Some countries boxing never gets headlines and it should.
You would think with the Hispanic diaspora in the sport that Spain/Portugal would cover boxing well. You go there and it rarely even gets in the paper.
Thats one place it wuld be good to draw on but the big money is, as was said earlier, HBO PPV buys. Thats a big market to tap into and thats what keeps boxing in the US.
Sometimes I wish the streams could be used to fund the sport in some way cos the PPV streams are great.Comment

Erm plenty of UK fans go Las Vegas. Not all fights in the US are also in Las Vegas...I'm not saying I support it but that is what a big fight demands and people are willing to pay it. Until the demand dwindles Vegas is always going to get the nod on big fights, even if the attendance is low.
I look at this way. It's Vegas, you know you're staying at least 2 days, probably more. Right there you're dropping 2 to 500 dollars. Then on top of that you know you're doing some ********, what else you gonna do? So you drop another one or two hundred(if you're lucky to stop at that) at the tables. Then, you're out in the desert, you're gonna eat at the buffets and the diners. So, pretty much a short 3 day weekend in Vegas besides the 300 to 1000 bucks on a ticket is gonna cost bare minimum a grand, maybe 2 grand a pop. What city is gonna be able compete with that? Who can drop 15 million on a big fight and make their money back strictly on tickets sales? It's just not feasible, no one can compete with MGM/Mirage.
Also I have spent 500 US dollars for a fightComment

HBO would have no interest in Khan if he was just fight in the U.K. Khan putting 10,000 seats at home for 30 dollars a pop isn't going to get him the money that the HBO machine gets him. I don't think people understand the differences in pay from Sky Sports, Showtime, or whatever compared to HBO. They really aren't even comparable. There's a reason why the biggest names are always on HBO. Trust me if Amir could make more money doing what you propose he certainly would. I have a feeling he's not that nice of a guy to throw away millions lol.Last edited by Check; 12-15-2010, 05:40 PM.Comment

I didn't say UK fans don't go to Las Vegas and I didn't say that Las Vegas has all the fights. What I said was Las Vegas GETS any fight they want.Comment
