For his legacy he certainly does. All fighters need each other. They need each other to make money and to create greatness. In all honestly, Manny has not had an impressive win in the last 5 years. If you call getting outboxed by Marquez, knocking him down 4 times, and STILL winning what is a famed debatable decision and a bunch of nobodies who outweigh him, "a cemented legacy" then you are wrong.
As a matter of fact, beating Floyd is the only way anybody can convince me that Pacquiao is a bonafide ATG.
He hasn't fought any top contenders at 135 (only David Diaz), nor did he fight the top guys at 140 (only Ricky Hatton). Those are pretty good deep divisions, yet Pacquiao took the easy belts and moved on.
Greatness is made by fighting GOOD fights.
Take a page from Joe Frazier, fighting the who's who, putting on shows that will be remembered forever like THE FIGHT OF THE CENTURY and THRILLA IN MANILLA.
What do we get from Pacquiao? "The event" vs Joshua "who the **** is this?" Clottey?
Get real guys. You want to tell yourself that Pacquiao doesn't need Floyd but that is the furthest thing from the truth.
Why do you think people want this fight so bad? Floyd's greatness is well known throughout most boxing analysts, as most of them pick Floyd to win, as do most retired boxers (Oscar DLH, Shane Mosley, Fernando Vargas, etc). The only people saying Pac doesn't need Floyd are his nuthugging fans, and you are only hurting his legacy, because whether or not he is your favorite fighter, HE DOES NEED TO FIGHT GOOD FIGHTERS. Pinoys are the only people who are OK with him fighting washed up tailor made come forward flat footed bums. Nobody else is.
He needs Floyd to prove his greatness, and that is why everybody is calling for this fight. They want to see that Manny is the real deal. They want him to be tested.
If Roach and Arum believed he could beat Floyd, we would have had a fight, trust me we would.
His trainer and promoter don't believe he can beat Floyd, why do you have to?
Manny doesn't need Floyd is a ridiculous statement. They need each other, and the sport needs it.
Thats like saying Ali didn't need Frazier. Tyson didn't need Holyfiled. Holyfield didn't need Bowe, etc. Yet those are all ATG fights that will be remembered forever, and trust me, nobody is going to look back at the fights with Manny as ATG fights.
