Imagine if some of the catch-weight fights wouldn't have happened because of this ban?

If it comes down to that, I would rather have a good match-up than care if they must come at the limit and therefore, one fighter backs out.

At the end of the day, we think about things like Martinez KOing Williams than it being a catch-weight fight.

Mayweather didn't request the catchweight. JMM did.

Pacquiao-Torrecampo was also at a catchweight.

        No, it was not.

Ok. Sugar Ray Leonard fought Donny Lalonde at a catchweight of 168 for the just invented WBC supper-middleweight belt AND the light heavyweight championship (175). So Ray won the LHW belt without either he or his opponent making the minimum.

Study your history, then shut the f&ck up

Yes it was. Pacquiao weighed in at 112 lbs, the flyweight limit. The fight was set for a catchweight of 111 lbs, 1 lb. below the flyweight limit. As a result of coming in overweight, Pacquiao had to wear heavier gloves.

Don't get why some people whine about CW fights, especially those who don't know any history and think it's a new phenomenon that Manny Pacquiao created.

If both sides contractually agree, then that's the end of the debate. CWs have always been a part of Boxing and there's no reason to think that will end any time in the future. Just a part of the game.

Good god, I don't care what happened in the past. No one claims that Pac started this shit. The inspiration for this thread wasn't even Manny Pacquiao, it was Sergio Martinez suggesting a 155 lb. catchweight for a Miguel Cotto fight which would be fought for the MW title.

                Straight bullshit.

I've seen plenty of misinformed people make that claim, including in this very thread.

Why though? Sergio won the championship, it's his to decide what he does with it, and as long as it's between 154.01-160 lbs then it's a MW fight and the belt can be on the line. If he chooses to offer a CW fight to Cotto or whoever, that's his right. If Cotto accepts and signs on the dotted line, then the fans have a hell of a fight.

Don't see what the issue is

Read carefully. It's the Middleweight title. 160 pounds. We have 17 fucking divisions in boxing. And we need catchweights?

160 is the LIMIT, not the weight class. Middleweight is anywhere from 154.01 to 160 LIMIT. 155 is middleweight and if the champion wants to make that the CW, it's his prerogative. Cotto or any other opponent has the right to weigh as much as 160 if they choose, but they would have to pay a penalty as per the contract (see Mayweather-Marquez).

Again... if the fight is within the WEIGHT CLASS, not just the LIMIT and both parties agree to it...

                      What is the issue?
