    Do we need weight classes in boxing anymore?

    Catchweights here, catchweights there, catchweights catchweights everywhere.

    What's the point of weight divisions when you can fight for a WW belt at 145, a LMW belt at 150, and MW belt at 155?

    Let's just scrap weight divisions altogether, and fighters can sign contracts based on the most even, beneficial weight for both participants.

    catchweights aren't really a big problem since they only happen every now and then.

    but weight classes are kinda pointless to an extent since most everyone rehydrate 10-20 pounds anyway, so a welterweight is really a junior middle or a middleweight by fight night.

      A well made point you make.

      My thoughts;

      1) There's too much tradition to scrap them in my opinion.

      2) Sanctioning bodies would **** their pants

      3) There would be no ''such and sucha champion of the world'' which has implications from recognising a fighter to marketing fights.

        Most hardcore fans have been annoyed by the fact that These sanctioning bodies have been giving away belts like Mayweather giving away turkeys on Thanksgiving,
        especially when they create rules of a max weight for a class, then a fighter comes along and fights below that weight while making his opponent weigh less that the max weight for a BELT NO LESS.

        Once Pac retires we can go back to the way it was when fighters fought for belts at the max weight allowed for that class. No more special rules. Catchweights are fine when no belt is on the line.

            sigh. pacquiao didn't invent catchweights, they've been around from hopkins to ray leonard to henry armstrong and beyond.

                too many ABC belts and paper champions. The public don't know who most of them are anymore.
