personally, i feel you are right.

there are two mega-rich guys, a few well-off dudes, and pretty much everyone else struggles. in golf, the #100 ranked player who you never heard of makes a million dollars a year.

        Interesting indeed.

I didn't know so many tickets was giveaways. Is that common in the states and has it always been like that?

The ticket giveaways has increased as the gate revenues became less important.

If you received , say, $1.5 million from the network (as in Khan-malignaggi), it is more important for you to put on an exciting event that has "buzz". And if that means that you give away 1,000 tickets at $100 apiece...so what?
That $100K means little in the grand scheme. It looks worse to have an empty arena on TV.

And since nobody knows those are giveaways, you can call him a "popular fighter" and you get bandwagon jumpers for his future fights.

Network licensing fees and the proliferation of PPV dates have changed the game significantly.

              That's correct.

It just seems kinda bad that giveaways is the norm. In Europe boxing has a much better draw with the fans, who like to see their favourite fighters and experience the ballyhoo attached to the fighters. Check the klits for reference, although the same can be said for lesser fighters as well.

The Florida Panthers can get 15,000+ people into the BankAtlantic to watch hockey, but in 2 cases of major boxing events the promoters couldn't get 1,000 people to pay for a ticket?

                Pathetic.

                Good thread.

But then again if fighters were fighting 4-5 in a year there'd be many more millionaires in the sport.

But you're right there are maybe 20 guys making million dollar pay days in boxing. It's sad considering they're the most skilled athletes on the planet IMO.

that is seriously something to think about. A haitian champion fighting a latino in miami draws fewer than 1,000 paid buyers.

                      WTF?!
