there is basically no advantage or disadvantage to either fighter because of the 24 rehydration clause. its basically nothing more than a mental edge. A placebo.
History of Catchweight fight results prove this.
Don't be ridiculous.
IT IS CHEATING HISTORY to fight for a vacant jmw title, at a catch-weight, against an undeserving fighter who currently could not even compete with the top welters, and who just returned from a 12 month ban for glove loading.
NOTE : the keywords were..... vacant, catch-weight, undeserving opponent.
If you condone that **** then you simply have no concept of the value of " the history of boxing ".
Neither Manny nor cheato deserve to fight for a jmw title. There are more deserving fighters that should be given that chance. But no, because Arum gave Sulaiman a hand-job, cheato is the man.
And Manny doesn't deserve to be there because he cannot fight within the normal divisional limit.
*** off with that rubbish.
When you insist upon a catch-weight, you are admitting that you could not compete at the normal divisional limit. For Cotto, I do not actually think it would have made too much of a difference, which makes that request a joke.
It is ridiculous to attempt to justify a catch-weight contest because fighters no longer weigh-in on fight day. WTF does that have to do with a catch-weight? The fight-night weight scale for both fighters simply moved up a notch. Today's welters come in bigger, WTF does that have to do with a catch-weight?

Give yourself an uppercut.
Calm down big guy. Take your meds...........
The fight while @ catchweight wasn't originally conceived with the vacant JMW trinket.
The corrupt boxing org. threw it in, for the licensing fee (bribe?) which Evil Bob gleefully accepted to add luster and as a selling tool........
Handicap races have also been going on for decades but they're bullshit, too. Luckily for athletics, handicap races are not accepted by the major athletics events. Shame the same isn't true of the boxing commissions.
The voice of common-sense.
And *** Manny Steward's opinion.
I used to respect him, but recently he just comes across like an idiot.
i take it you didnt read the thread & the examples i posted in it. to elite fighters 1 or 2lbs dont really matter. using oscar as an example is just pure ignorance & ******ity. oscar lost because he was old & washed up. the weight just compounded the problem.
read the thread before spouting off your Floids infected virus talking point.
Guns dont kill people. People kill people. Size dont win fights, Fighters win fights.
Again,
24 hour rehydration policy in todays era make catchweight criticism completely illegitimate:
1 pound can make a HUGE difference, IF, it is the last pound..... REGARDLESS as to whether you are an elite fighter or not. And, we did not get to see if Oscar was "old & washed up" because he weighed 145 two weeks before the fight. It was a joke, Oscar had a serious brain-fart, he should have been 150'ish with a week to go. He became the little man, and his frame couldn't support it.
You are the guy in the Greenburg thread yesterday that said that he was a knowledgable "real" fan, but it appears that you are just a Manny-fluffer.
Why would Manny Steward have anything bad to say about catch-weights when his Kronk legend fought in some. And nobody, even sports writers, have ever said Ray Leonard cheated history. I believe that if both fighters agree, then who cares. Margarito fought most of his career at 147 anyway, and when he did move up to 154 lbs against Santos, he looked way too sluggish (although I did think he did enough to win)...
boxing nowadays, a lot of it is about making weight. the 24 hr rehydration rule just completely has perverted the boxing weight divisions.
Catchweights were made to prevent cancellations of fights, not because of medical malfeasance.
Rubbish, real fighters used to make weight. Catchweight bouts allow the big names to meet in matches that grab the public's imagination. It was to showcase an EXHIBITION MATCH, not sanction a title fight.
A champion should be able to weigh in at the division's limit and be able to concentrate purely on the battle inside the ring, not the battle to lose weight to accommodate a popular challenger.
If a fighter wants to step up into a new division, they should accept that their opponent may hold a natural size advantage and either come up with tactics to combat that or build themselves up and grow into the weight class.
Within the next month we could have a light middleweight champion who has never fought a light middleweight opponent. Just like how The Ring ranked Manny the #1 welterweight, when he had never actually fought a welterweight at 147.
