I haven't read any books about him but check out this thread called "Clearing the name of Thomas Hears". It's a great read.
BTW I checked out reviews of MArk Krams book and it was overly a mixed reaction. It definately isn't a five star book. But since you've reccommended it, I'll try and have a look.
BTW his name spelt backwards is the same.

Also, If you look at the foot (I think the right) that Liston was leading with and had most of his weight on, it lifted about an inch or two off the ground as soon as that punch landed. That's the brain sending strange signals to the legs we sometimes call buckling. That was a legitimate ko IMO.Comment

I cannot profess to know the truth, who does?
However the punch although clean and had snap was when Ali was moving backwards/sidewards and there was little weight behind it. Liston was known for taking a shot, yet he went down then rolled over?
Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, and Gene Tunney who knew Liston all thought that he took a dive.
In answer to the question though, if it was a phantom punch, it was a excellent counter punch. The real question should be was it hard enough to KO a fighter like Liston?
