It takes 3,500 calories burned to lose one pound and 1 mile sure doesn't require 3,500 burned calories/energy. The weight you're losing during actual training is momentary and in the form of fluids. He will lose the weight because he's an athlete who does this for a living and because they'll do what they have to do. The problem with having to lose that much weight that fast is that it is very hard to do without also losing some muscle and without taxing your immune system. Both of which will affect your strength and endurance. He would obviously be in a much better position to compete on fight night if he allowed himself an average weekly weight loss of 2-3 LBS per week.
