only problem i have with a catch weight is when a fighter purposely neglects the agreed weight to have an advantage.Comment

Same. The fighters should abide by the contract. As long as they both come in at the contracted weight that both sides negotiated and agreed to, it's fair game.

Exactly, Look what happened in the recent times, people are not even trying to even lose weight because the penalties are so weak that there is nothing to gain from punishing yourself by losing weight.
like the Funeka-Guzman fights, dude didnt even care about weight and came in like 12 lb heavier and stopped him.
Part of making the weight is the hard work and dedication, so when someone is trying and the other person goes MEH ill just not fight for the belt its a shame and they should be suspended for unfair tactics.Comment

Boxers like Pacquiao and Floyd can generate big paydays and massive acclaim for their opponents. Because of the, both parties agreeing doesn't prove much because there's reason to believe that one party is only agreeing because of the money they stand to make, not because the circumstances are fair.AMEN.
Who the **** cares if both guys agree to fight in a weight class for a belt, 148-154 is LMW, 154 is just the LIMIT. 151 is light-middleweight and a belt can and should be legit. As long as guys are getting in the ring after both parties agree, who cares about a catchweight... as long as they're fighting. If fighting at a catchweight makes Williams-Martinez happen, then let's do it, even if it doesn't make much sense haha. just fight.
Mosley was willing to go to 140 for Pac. And before you say "140 isn't a catchweight!" the point is that when you are a bigger draw than you are opponent, they are often willing to make concessions that put them at a disadvantage, just because they are so desperate for the fight.Comment

I rather like the catch-weight than avoiding or ducking a fighter. Fight in the ring and no talk. Let the fist talk.

A) Where are you getting your info from? Roach said he wanted Shane to go to 142 for a fight with Pac but they could negotiate 143-145, Shane said he couldn't make that weight, not that it mattered since Pac ended up fighting Cotto at 145.Boxers like Pacquiao and Floyd can generate big paydays and massive acclaim for their opponents. B) Like Shane, if a fighter feels he can't make a certain weight, he can negotiate another or walk away, simple as that. No one is forcing these guys to fight.
How exactly is Margarito, a natural welter, going to be weakened at 151 (rehydrating to 155+ probably)? It's just a contract stipulation with one fighter's representatives trying to get any sort of balance or advantage in the bout. Cotto fought Clottey and won at 146... he was at full strength, right? Then he fought Pac at 145 and was obliterated, but he was weakened, right? What a massive difference a pound makes.Originally posted by solo20catchweight are crap only *******s support this i on the other hand dont it weaken the fighter while the other is at full strength bullcrap i sayComment

Welcome to The Ring. The bible of boxing. All access to boxing's latest news, matches, fights and events.
The point is that boxers like Pacquiao are able to secure fight conditions that give them an advantage. Yeah, their opponents could walk away, but they don't because of the payday, not because they think it's a fair.Comment
