Comments Thread For: Maidana Requests Purse Bid, Expects Khan To Vacate Title

HBO need to invest some more money into this fight. If Khan can't earn what he is contractually entitled to, then Golden Boy need to step up.
Personally, I wouldn't take a $300,000 pay cut out of my own money to fund a challengers purse. It would be great if Khan negotiated a new contract that allowed Maidana to be paid 45%, but people can't blame him if he refuses. This is a job for the promoters to sort out.
If Maidana is entitled to 45% then that it what he should get. And if Khan would rather vacate than accept 55% then he absolutely should lose all credibility. GBP should find a way to pay them both what they want, but if they can't, then Khan should accept 55%. He'll still be paid very well, and he really needs to beat Maidana if he doesn't want his stock to go into the gutter.
Khan needs to realise that boxing is a sport, not just a money-making exercise. And if he doesn't wake up to that fact, then in the long term, his money making potential will dramatically decrease because he'll lose most of his fans.Last edited by Dave Rado; 09-10-2010, 12:25 PM.Comment

If anyone is confused about whether Maidana is in the right financially or whether he's being greedy etc. According to WBA rules. When the interim meets the champion, the split is 45% to the interim, 55% to the champion.
You can look this up and see all the other examples at other weights when this has happened, and also here from last time Maidana Khan went to bidding, prior to Khan signing with GBP.
If you search on the wbanews site you will be able to find the following from when the it first went to purse bids.
DIVISION: SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT (140 Lbs.)
CONTENDERS: AMIR KHAN (UK) VS. MARCOS MAIDANA (ARG)
(WBA CHAMPION) (INTERIM CHAMPION)
MINIMUM AMOUNT: US$ 150,000.00
PURSE BID SPLIT: (55% WBA CHAMPION 45% INTERIM CHAMPION)
HBO offered a total purse, that doesn't allow for Khan to get what he wants and at the same time pay Maidana get 45% of that sum. So rather than Khan taking less than his million+ he believes Maidana should take less and accusing him in the press of demanding too much money, saying it's 3x what he's earned before etc, forgetting the fact that he's entitled to it.
It's outrageousComment

You're right that it's a problem for GBP to sort out - but it's GBP's problem, not HBO's problem. Khan has no contract with HBO.

I'm just going to wait until some real news comes out regarding the matter and I'm not going to comment further until then. I don't think Maidana is the saint everybody is making him out to be. I mean, he has already faked injury to get out of one fight over money. What else is he capable of?
You don't have to take his word for it that he's entitled to 45% of the purse. It's stated in the WBA's rules.Last edited by Dave Rado; 09-10-2010, 12:44 PM.Comment

I don't whether this has already been pointed out but Maidana has already said in an article on here that 'my money is my buisness' (http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&id=30743) so I don't know who to believe anymore. Is Khan being a ***** or is Maidana hungry for a payday?Comment

From Khan's point of view, he's entitled to $1 million minimum per fight, because that's what GBP promised him.
Clearly to any neutral observer, if the total pot isn't big enough to make both entitlements possible (which it seems not to be), then Maidana's entitlement should take precedence, because in a title fight, the WBA's rules have to take precedence over any personal contract.
So GBP should find the money to pay both fighters what they want, because they created the mess by signing Khan up to a ******ly unrealistic contract. But if they can't find the extra money, then Maidana should get 45% and Khan should take 55%, even if that means he gets less than a million dollars.
If Khan pulls out of the fight because he won't go below $1 million, he will clearly be the one who is in the wrong. As someone else said, for him to expect Maidana to accept less than he's entitled to under WBA rules, and for him to publicly call Maidana greedy for refusing to do so, is simply outrageous.Comment
