If anyone is confused about whether Maidana is in the right financially or whether he's being greedy etc. According to WBA rules. When the interim meets the champion, the split is 45% to the interim, 55% to the champion.

You can look this up and see all the other examples at other weights when this has happened, and also here from last time Maidana Khan went to bidding, prior to Khan signing with GBP.

If you search on the wbanews site you will be able to find the following from when the it first went to purse bids.

HBO offered a total purse, that doesn't allow for Khan to get what he wants and at the same time pay Maidana get 45% of that sum. So rather than Khan taking less than his million+ he believes Maidana should take less and accusing him in the press of demanding too much money, saying it's 3x what he's earned before etc, forgetting the fact that he's entitled to it.

It's outrageous

So Maidana will get at least 900k based on HBO offering 2 mill for the fight. And if it goes to purse bid, the winning bid will be for more than 2 mill since everyone knows HBO has already put money out there for it. This is a smart business decision by Maidana. Get everything you are entitled to.

Here's some further clarification for those interested. This will help explain where these reporting numbers are coming from.

Khan's deal with GBP gaurantees him a minimum of 1.25million dollars for each of the 3 fight deal. Also as he actually is in co-promotion with GBP. On top of this sum he also takes all UK PPV revenue himself, and deals with the British broadcasters independently of GBP.

Now...

1.25million is 55% of 2.27 million. This is the total purse that would be required to stage the event. 45% of 2.27million is 1 million. This is where the "Maidana is demanding 1 million dollars" story comes from. This is in fact his entitlement assuming Khan gets his gaurantee under WBA rules.

The problem is that HBO have offered around 2 million for the event. So in which case the purse needs to be reduced significantly. However Team Khan are insisting they get their guarantee, it's not possible to give Khan his gaurantee on the 55-45 ratio stated in the WBA rules, so they are putting stories into the press that Maidana demands are too high, when in fact it's Khans guarantee that is putting Maidana entitlement so high.

It could be argued that the fault for this is with GBP in offering Khan this ridiculous contract, especially when you consider that Khan's UK PPV revenue is seperate to the 1.25million

Hopefully the WBA will speak soon on the matter.
