In my opinion the on going Boxing versus MMA discussion is absurd. Boxing fans and MMA fans as a whole come from two different demographics. Based on what I have seen, heard, and discussed with various people, there isn't a lot of cross over. One sport is not a threat to the other in any way, shape, or form.

If the PPV for November 13th comes together like it is suppose to, we will see Manny Paquiao (an international mega-star,) Antonio Margarito (a huge star in Mexico and the SW USA,) and Kelly Pavlik (a star with a big following in the USA, and something of an international following) all on the same show. The live gate will come in at 70-75,000 paid attendees, and the PPV will come in at around 1 million buys. If there ever comes a time when MMA can pull those kind of numbers, but boxing can't, we might have reason to worry. Until then there is no problem.

Why do you need other people's approval for what you like? I know no one else personally that loves boxing as much as I do. I know no one else personally who follows the teams and sports I do (Detroit sports fan living in Tennessee). I know no one who reads the types of books I like (economics/theology/philosophy). I relate to almost no one. I am pretty much a hermit. I like what I like and I don't like what I don't like, and one thing I don't like is the herd and what the mainstream tells me I should like. I also don't like when mainstream opinion pushes people to like something. Who cares about them? Seriously?

I would be very surprised if 5 years from now HBO is still showing boxing.

They are planning an exit, and it will happen soon.

        HBO will discontinue boxing.

Showtime has already began to show more MMA than Boxing and is slowly phasing boxing out.

ESPN has also began showing MMA.

Boxing is being discontinued on American television and that is simply fact...

FRONT PAGE of Yahoo Sports shows a bloody Toney getting beat up by Randy

and says "Boxer no chance for MMA legend"

what kind of message do you think that sends to society and mainstream sports audience?

            Message is this:

            MMA > Boxing

If you cant see this shift taking place, you're not very intelligent

Jeebus chicken little relax. Showtime has like 5 more Shobox cards alone this year, the Super 6, while it's had issues, has been successful. Telemundo brought back Solo Boxeo (which is big in the United States, especially in the southwest). Top Rank Live was created and airs frequently on Fox Sports en Espanol and regional affiliates. HBO's ratings for boxing have been decent. Fight Night Club moved from Versus to Fox Sports Net. Lou DiBella made a new deal to re-air foreign fights on regional sports networks. Regional sports networks show some of the Golden Gloves amateur stuff. Regional sports networks air local fights (Watched a Philly card recently with Paulie Malignaggi announcing, Fox Sports Detroit airs Detroit area fights). ESPN will show the Klitschko fight online and on the network.

                  Relax dude.

you know there was a time when boxing wasn't a niche sport and you could see the likes of Duran, Sugar Ray, De La Hoya, ect. on local channels like CBS....UFC has a bigger chance of getting that spot than boxing

                    easy to understand kid?
And who's stopping that from happening? I'd wager it's because BIG name boxers PREFER to use PPV. They make huge sums of money, much bigger than what advertisers would pay them.

You really think advertisers would really pay Pacquiao and Mayweather 50mil each to fight each other, just to have their commercial shown between rounds?

Hell, it'd be cheaper to buy 20 commercials for the superbowl.

Thats because you live in Wales. Boxing is doing amazing in Europe.

Unfortunately, its doing very bad in North America and tonight was truly friggin embarassing.
