I think Toney hurt the sport we love quite a bit tonight. All the morons chanting "UFC, UFC" was a bit sickening. But I agree that this was a horrible card and that the UFC is little more than snake oil packaged and sold by chief huckster Dana White. White was still saying "Toney is in great shape" after he saw Toney at the weigh-in. White is a fraud, a con-man.

Agree. Please people, no excuses for James Toney. Toney threw boxing under the bus in a huge televised event and made the sport look bad. He will NEVER get another big boxing match and will be essentially blackballed for doing this. The notion that the Klitschkos are "ducking" his fat ass is even more hilarious now. Toney was very quiet after this farce because even he knows it's all over for him. Stick a fork in James Toney: he is DONE. That was his last big payday.Comment

I never gave Toney a chance. And he did humiliate himself, I agree. See, we're of the same opinion there.
I know I sound like I'm bitter, but that's not it. Speaking of MMA in general, I think submissions are a pain to watch.
Not for me at all.
Starjammer, one, the headline wasn't my headline, but your analysis is way off. If a choke is nothing, then, well, escape from the choke. The whole point of mixed martial arts is that there are several variables, many things you can do in an attempt to win.
Toney came in thinking he only needed to do one thing. Couture showed him that there's more to MMA... he transitioned from boxing to wrestling to submissions.
I stand by that analysis. And that's why I can't get into the MMA. Because I can't get the art of the submissions, I can't appreciate the setups, etc.
That part doesn't interest me in the least. Each to their own.
Imagine going to see the MMA movie version of Rocky. Rocky wins by forcing his opponent to tap out. I'd be looking for my ticket money back
Believe me I get that MMA is all about the variables, I don't have to like it though.
You wrote a good article anyway, hope you don't think I was digging at it. I just thought that headline was off.Last edited by starjammer; 08-29-2010, 12:26 AM.Comment

Agree. No Pac-May, no Klitschko-Haye, etc. And now this worldwide televised kick in the teeth from Dana White. This is a bad year for our beloved sport.Comment

Watched the fight...not a surprise. I mean if it's your first fight in the sport are you going to fight a Hall of Famer?! No you start from the bottom and fight with the beginners!
It's like putting in a boxing debut guy in with Hopkins, Mosley, Pacquiao, Mayweather and etc.....
Anyways not trying to make an excuse for James Toney because he was being so ****y. He deserved it.Comment

Starjammer, apologies for any 'tude on my part. I'm starving and waiting for this post-fight presser to get going.
But I've got to tease you. You didn't say a choke is nothing... but you said it means nothing? You got to admit that distinction's a bit funny.
Yes, if there's nothing to a fight but a guy shooting in and getting caught in a guillotine choke, that's anticlimactic.
But if a fighter can get dominant position and completely prevent someone from doing anything else and then get a submission, that's good work.
As I've always said in the tired MMA vs. boxing debate, it's a matter of taste. If you don't like MMA, that's fine. Some MMA fans don't like boxing. Some of us like both.
What we enjoy in life is all about taste. Me, I don't like sappy romantic movies, so I don't watch 'em.Comment
