How do you become a star?

I was reading at larryx's thread and this came to my mind.

How do you become a star in the sport of boxing? You got stars like De La Hoya, Tyson, Trinidad, Hatton, Pacquiao, Mayweather, and others, who became HUGE, boxers that really transcended boxing.

So, I'm asking, how do you become a star?

I'm not really sure, those guys you mentioned became stars for various reasons. DLH for his Olympic background, physical looks, and charisma. Tyson for his knockout power when the HW division was declining and his controversy.

I guess marketability can be obtained for some of those reasons.

No man, it doesn't have to do anything with signing anywhere. Or am I missing something?

With the media and the right promotion behind, anyone can become a star.

being a good looking olympic medalist that has an exciting fighting style with a good chin and KO power and is comfortable/likeable in interviews would do the trick. And as an added bonus have already highly recognised names in your weight class that u beat

              Star quality makes stars.

              Go ask a Hollywood agent.

many people think it is just "be exciting in the ring" and that is all, but it also takes CHARISMA and a good personality outside of the ring, that is what helped made Ali a World Wide SUPERSTAR, Oscar had it as well as did Ray Leonard and like him or not Mayweather has it also, you also can't be afraid to be a little controversial, looks can help with the female fans, Oscar became as big as he was mostly because of the females

it is very difficult to become a crossover superstar in America with just your skills in the ring ALONE

Yeah, I agree. Just being exciting in the ring doesn't make you a superstar. Look at Israel Vasquez, that guy would be a mega star if exciting styles make you a star.

Stars aren't really made in the ring, they are made outside of the ring. Leonard, Ali, Tyson, ODH, Floyd all have (to various degrees) something outside the ring to attract casual fans to them. They are entertainers not just boxers. Bhop, Mosley, or my favorite, Marvin Hagler lack that same quality.

You have to be more than a great fighter/boxer. You have to be able to communicate and entertain in a way that makes people love or hate you so passionately.Bhop, Mosley, Hagler can entertain in the ring but not out of it.
