Floyd Mayweather Jr or Bernard Hopkins: Who has the higher ring IQ?
Collapse

we're splitting hairs. The two fighters over the last 15 years with the higest ring iq's. no doubt. floyd really impressed me in the mosley fight, but bhop uses more tricks (such as borderline tactics) an opposed to more athleticism.
to say it's not close is asinine.Comment

Yeah ofcourse its a pretty broad term but I like fefists look on it.we're splitting hairs. what you said about bhop is the samething floyd does tooHopkins.
Floyd is a master at making adjustments (perfect examples are mosley, judah). Once floyd figures out those adjustments to make and the right amount of distance to keep, etc, it's a wrap. I don't really think floyd has much of a game plan, he just gets into the ring, sees what their about and adjusts accordingly.
Bernard is CONSTANTLY thinking. He's always thinking about setting up traps. he's thinking about what he's going to do 3-4-5 punches down the line. He even throws punches he purposely misses because he anticipates what the opponent will do and he'll nail you with a counter. Perfect example the knockout shot on Tito. On top of that he comes up with specific gameplans for specific opponents.

they're both great at what they do, and both have high ring IQ's, i think i lean more towards hopkins having a slightly higher Ring IQ because he's been the underdog mostly in his fights, in his career, where he has had to overcome certain challenges, and although he has some losses, he follows his game plan to the "T", whether the judges like it or not, that isnt his fault per se.
floyd has always been the favorite in his fights, most of all his opponents have taken the same game plan to floyd, which is come at him and try and force him to fight, which always plays out into floyds style and favor in his fights. floyd has made adjustments which have been brought up IE judah and mosley fight, as well as the chavez fight when he fought with a busted hand, but those were just a few to the many of hopkins, minus the fact that hopkins has been the underdog in most of his fights.
so to me, the guy that is expected to lose and usually wins, seems to me to have the higher ring IQ because for one he proves people and the "experts" wrong with his skill and ring smarts, also he's having to overcome more adversity than that of the always " favorite"...........
thats just my take on it....Last edited by deuce_drop; 08-06-2010, 05:26 PM.Comment

The way Mayweather walked Hatton into that left hook is a classic. As soon as the clinch was broken, he back pedaled and Hatton just walked right to it.Comment

I didn't vote. The jury's gonna' be out on this one for awhile. Bernard has gotten more crafty as the years have passed. Floyd is probably sharper than Bernard was at the same age, but 10 yrs from now? We'll see if the comparison holds up.Comment

I think its Mayweather and not even close. That's not putting BHop down, Floyd's just that good.Comment

It is a toss up, but I'd go slightly with Hopkins because he doesn't have the athletic gifts Floyd does, yet he gets hit cleanly even less than Floyd does. He knows how to completely neutralize an opponent's weapon the second they show it.Comment
