  • Why Bernard won, and why Bernard is still the best

If you'll watch the entire fight, rewind it, and then watch it second time, you will realize that Taylor did not land but one or two 'flush' punches on Bernard. The rest were all shrugged off power punches, while they looked good to the average novice fan or judge because leather is flying in the ring, to a person that really knows Boxing it's easy to see he was missing with 99% of his punches, because Nard would duck his head right out of the pocket like the insane veteran that he is. On the occassion that a punch would land, Bernard's head would be moving away from the punch,(i do this) so even if that catches him it causes zero damage.

Even if you are bold and novice enough to say Taylor legitimately won, you can't deny Hopkins greatness..he owned Taylor, he was landing straight right hands right on the button, I'm not sure if anyone else heard the lead straight right hand Hop landed in the 9th or 10th, to me, it sounded almost like a .22 going off. And when in the history of the sport have you seen an undefeated bull with a 75%+ KO percentage get owned by a 40 year old man/not land a single clean flush power punch on him? NEVER! The old guy always gets his ass kicked or at least takes some shots, not Bernard. He is still the greatest, and you sadists that say he's boring, can lick my *******.

You have to admire Bernard for his inside work. While he was holding and hitting at times, you just have to understand that's how the man fights. He's not hitting behind the head, he likes to hold and dig in his power hand into your body 2-3 times, then unclinch. It's not Ruiz, and it's not Hatton, it's Bernard's version of roughhousing and it's completely legitimate in my opinion. Hatton spins opponents around and punches behind the head, Ruiz constantly grabs, Bernard just does it when he feels he needs an edge. Bernard is the king at cheesy infighting like that and making it look good. He'll turn his back to the ref and do it, and when the ref turns to get a better look Nard will turn with the ref and keep punching, it's really quite skillful.

Lastly, you have to admire the way Bernard fakes his accidental headbutts. I believe it was in round four or five, he comes in with the hardest part of his body aimed straight at Taylor's chin, his neck is immobile and stationary, while throwing punches coming in so it looks unintentional, he lands the top of his head FLUSH on Taylor's chin, turning Taylor's skull 90 degrees to the side. A ****ing work of art.

Yeah, and don't forget, Taylor was holding onto Bernard because he was dazed, at least once, in that fight.

I think Bernard was robbed, by HBO, because the fans all hate Bernard's style except those few hardcore fans like myself..Not only that but Bernard has a thugged out attitude and the fat white guy who runs HBO doesn't like that ****, he'd rather put a young guy like Taylor who tucks in his shirt and is from a redneck town on the throne, it's just a ****ed up situation..

oh and Dibella did you hear how he was talking **** about nard saying Taylor is gonna knock him the **** out? man i swear to god i know he'd sue me but put me in a room with him and I swear id strangle that mother****er

Slipz you make a lot of good points and you know that I respect what you have to say about the sport but I still think what's missing from your arguments is the fact that Hopkins did nothing to hurt or even faze Taylor in the first 9 rounds. 10-12, he owned him cause Taylor was a fool and dropped his hands, but whiel a lot of Taylor's shots weren't dead-on in the early going, Hopkins wasn't doing anything in his countering that convinced me that he was hurting Taylor. In terms of pure activity, Taylor took the rounds.

I agree with you on everythign you said about Hopkins...he's a true warrior and was a great champ. I just don't think he did enough that night to keep his titles.

YEs anyone who has seen me talk about B-Hop knows that I was always questioning him as a fighter because of his Record against a Weak Middleweight Division .
I am a Fan now after watching that fight and seeing the young Bull clinging for lfe in the 10th round .

B_ Hop should have got the decision , he was the champ , he was 15 years older then the guy. He landed more punches in the whole fight he showed better defense , and had him just about out in 3 of the last 4 rounds

Hopkins won that fight and should still be the champ. if you would've asked Taylor, Burns or DiBella after the fight but before the decision was announced, they would've told you so.

Hopkins allowed Taylor to shoot his load early while he gauged his speed, power and ascertained what his fight plan was and then he started dispensing his boxing lesson. Taylor was hurt twice and was led around the ring as if by leash for the entire 2nd half of the fight.

What sickens me is the commentary. it's obvious that HBO was pushing for Taylor because they have no one left in their stable to carry the HBO banner. Lampley screamed about Taylor's missed punches while not even mentioning Hopkins' landed punches. Merchant was so busy discrediting Hopkins that he was missing Hopkins' work. Roy was the only voice of truth on the mic that night.

Hopkins should stillbe champ and Taylor knows it!

I'm gonna say it this way : Bernard Hopkins lost on points but won the fight.

By the end of the 10th round, Jermain Taylor looked punch drunk. He looked punch drunk again by the end of the 11th. And I thought he'd get caught for sure in the 12th. He did but still managed to stand up and fight. THough barely.

Exactly! somebody needs to tell Merchant that it's not his show. if not for the fighters, who would tune in to hear him ramble? he's so self-absorbed that it's not even funny.

Slipx, You are the biggest nut-hugger I've ever seen. Like I said either you have to be blind to say Hopkins won or an asslicker like yourself. Hopkins didn't even win a round in the first 9 rounds. A few of the first 9 rounds could've been a draw at best. Hopkins won the last 3 rounds. Taylor won atleast 7 rounds. Hopkins is a dirty fighter, he was getting away with holding hitting, He was a ***** for the first 9 rounds, running around the ring like a little *****. Taylor was cut in lost alot of blood, that is the #1 reason Taylor ran out of gas. Hopkins didn't have the ball to brawl with a fresh Taylor in first half of the fight. Like I said if Hopkins brawls with Taylor in the rematch, Hopkins will get knocked out silly.
