Comments Thread For: Margarito-Pacquiao 'Title Fight' Another Super Disgrace

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Maybe it’s the travel lag … and/or my general grumpiness.

Because after a seven-day stretch that’s included more than 2,000 road miles over four states and two time zones – not to mention a pair of multi-hour plane rides, stays in three hotels and what seemed like 100 hours of convention events – I’m a little short on patience.

So when I began making notes to create this week’s column in the lobby of yet another lodging establishment in lovely Macon, Ga. – free wireless coverage at La Quinta Inns & Suites rocks, by the way – I was already on the prowl for someone to tear in to.

With that as an objective, boxing rarely disappoints.

And this time around, it’s the same-old chorus on a brand-new song.

Much as he did this time last year with news he’d face Miguel Cotto for the WBO welterweight championship, Filipino phenomenon Manny Pacquiao is commandeering headlines this week with the choice of his next title-fight opponent – Antonio Margarito.

According to multiple reports, Pacquiao will meet the disgraced former 147-pound kingpin on Nov. 13 in either Nevada or Mexico, pending Margarito’s eventual status in Las Vegas after would-be locker room shenanigans with Shane Mosley 18 months ago.

The debate on whether Margarito should fight at all is still a lively one.

And because no one outside of he and his closest teammates really knows what happened in the back rooms at Staples Center a year ago January, I’ll defer to the judgment of the Nevada commission to make a correct call after examining the evidence. [Click Here To Read More]

But it's "right" when Mayweather does it? We get it. All or most boxers will face this sooner or later unless the whole game's reformed.

You know what Fitz, if the belt commission allows it, they're to blame and not Arum or Pacquiao. They are catering to him and his ego. If they simply said no catch weight, it'd be the end of the discussion. Either way I don't expect much of a fight either way. Margorito will surprise people with a crucial KO, or Pac-man will do what he did to Clottey and just beat him up with speed. Either way, snoozefest.

The bigger wag of the finger goes to Mayweather's camp, with this pathetic attempt at trying to save face WEEKS after Arum first talked about on going negotiations. Amazing how none of this surfaced prior to the well publicized deadline.

As a side note, if Floyd's not interested in taking a fight til next year, that's respectable. The amount of time and energy it takes to train for a fight can take it's toll. But who here thinks this trip to PR will lead to a match with Cotto sometime this fall/winter? If it gets announced, no one will be able to deny Mayweather ducked Pacquiao. Twice.

Honestly, I don't think it was right to have those hand-wraps (obviously right?), but people need to relax a bit. He didn't even get away with it. Mosley, Trinidad, Toney, Vargas, Briggs, etc. have all been tested positive as cheats but are also highly regarded. Why? Margarito has had a great career going toe-to-toe with the best, has given us great fights, etc. and everyone believes his legacy SHOULD be left tainted and frowned upon? Yes, I know the difference between plaster and steroids, but a cheat is a cheat and enhancing your performance through substances isn't any more dangerous. Most of the fighters I mentioned are genuine heavy hitters and then you're adding more enhancement to that? Now that's dangerous, but why do people still put them on a positive pedestal? They all also got away with it with proof, but Tony didn't. Just something to think about.

I for one am in favor of this fight, although I don't agree with the title, I'm sure everyone nowadays doesn't give two ****s about titles and care more about who's fighting. I think it'll be one of the great entertaining fights that Boxing has been needing, but everyone is bitching and complaining about it. Now lets say that Pac and Mayweather fought, regardless of outcome, and Pac decided to fight Margarito. I guarantee NO ONE that matters would be complaining about this fight. The core of peoples disappointment in this fight trails back to the Pac-May negotiations. If things didn't fall through, nobody would be complaining. This is a legit fight with all things aside. Margarito was on top of the world after the Cotto fight. Everyone would say that he is THE welter-weight. Margarito is a legit opponent regardless of the controversy. Why can't everyone be glad for this great competition? Sure it's an in-house fight, but how often nowadays do we come across a big fight that would be considered even fair? Lets appreciate what we have left right now. We're suppose to be trying to help boxing survive, instead we are downplaying it and calling it a disappointment.

No matter what Pac touches it turns to gold is exactly right. Even if Mayweather just did it and got bashed for it.

Its interesting how it works. Mayweather beats an undefeated fat boy in Ricky Hatton who has to drop weight just to make 140-147. NOT the other way around. Yet Pac beats an exposed, beaten and destroyed Ricky Fatton he ges praised?

Mayweather beats Hoya with zer advantages at Hoya's comfortable weight and everyone called Hoya old and washed up. Pac destroys Hoya and gets praised? lol How does that work?

Pac CLEARLY ducks "too good" Mosley several times yet Mayweather defeats him and gets bashed for beating the very same guy Pac just ducked.... How does that work?

So I like the "everything Pac touches turns to gold" because no matter how ****ty the fighter or event is.... he gets turned into greatness just to make Pac look good. lol
