By Keith Idec - With Tomasz Adamek seated beside him, Teddy Atlas announced during ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” broadcast from Newark, N.J., a week ago that “a little birdie” told him that Michael Grant would withdraw from his Aug. 21 fight against Adamek at Prudential Center.
Grant, whom Atlas once trained, hasn’t pulled out of the fight. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound former contender is expected to attend a press conference to officially announce his 12-round bout against the popular Polish contender on Tuesday in North Bergen, N.J.
What Atlas failed to mention during the telecast was that Alexander Povetkin, the heavyweight he currently trains, had no intention of boarding a plane bound for Frankfurt, Germany, a couple days later. A representative for Povetkin, who seemed fine when Atlas and Joe Tessitore interviewed him during that same broadcast last week, claimed a sinus infection prevented Povetkin from attending a press conference Monday in Frankfurt to officially announce his long-overdue mandatory match against Wladimir Klitschko.
