If you stand in front of volume punchers covering up without throwing anything then there is a big chance that they would throw over a thousand punches, Volume punchers love to throw punches that what they LOVE to do and the only way to discourage them is when you have punches landing on them not when you cover up doing nothing while static.

This is the only answer I have heard so far. I could counter that logic by saying that Clottey covered up so much because he was getting barraged by such a high volume of power punches. I am willing to concede that Clottey's shell could have helped to produce a higher number of punches from pac but not over 1200 and not the quantity of power punches he was able to throw.

Its not hard to throw 1231 punches, when you have some one not really throwing punches back. Pacs numbers would have been a lot lower if clottey had thrown more punches back.

Cotto, Marquez, and even Diaz attempted to fight as where Clottey visibly early on in the fight was just shelling up and not throwing any punches. When you consider the energy fighters use to always be on the move and absorbing punishment throughout a fight, you're not going to see a lot of 1,200 punch counts being both guys are not trying to get hit as often. Pacquiao saw Clottey wasn't doing anything thus kept throwing punches to try to at least get him to open up, where I believe things would've gotten worse for Clottey.
