Comments Thread For: 'New' Miguel Cotto: Veteran Trainers Saw No Changes

The most well known veteran trainers in Puerto Rico saw no real changes in Miguel Cotto as they watched him stop Yuri Foreman last Saturday to win the WBA junior middleweight title in Yankee Stadium. There has been some hype that Cotto is a "new" Cotto because of his new trainer Emanuel Steward. Veteran trainers in Cotto's country do not agree. [Click Here To Read More]

As long as his trainer is as great as Steward, Cotto's going to be fine. Just don't take Santiago back.

Steward and his sad attempt to revive a broken, useless boricua boxer. Pathetic.

I've found trainers to be the biggest *******s in boxing. They rarely want to give another trainer props for his work, and they seem to be on a full-time mission to prove that their training methods and boxing knowledge is superior to everyone elses. Cotto's improvement was clear to me, and it will become more pronounced over time.

Stewards job was to make small fundamental changes, not turn Cotto into Pernell Whitaker. Cottos balance and head down come forward style is what needed alot of attention and i saw alot of changes with that. In addition, his speed and power appeared to improve greatly..

Agreed, you dont change a boxer overnight. Cotto needs to be groomed over time and so far so good.

Everyone said Yuri was a stylistic nightmare for Cotto.

No they're saying Yuri was tailor made for Cotto?

Cotto improved he got better than Cotto vs Clottey. Emmanuel improved him but nobody can change a fighter that fast I think he needs more time with Steward do not forget Cotto came back after tough fights with Margarito,Clottey and Pacquiao.

he looked alot better to me. u cant become a completely diffrent fighter in one camp, but the groundwork has been laid down. u can tell hes been working on certain things and it will tell more and more as he gets more fights with steward. his jab was much more effective but u could tell steward had been working alot on his footwork and balance, controling distance, moving his head and blocking shots aswell.

skillwise hes gonna be a better fighter, the question is if hes got the heart to deal with adversity. he hasnt shown it since margarito beat the fight out of him, maybe working with steward will re ignite his love for the sport and make him hungrier again. but we'll see.
