I don't know about the UK, but I know about boxing and if Khan wasn't so careful about opponents he would be more accepted as a champion world wide.
If Amir Khan Was White British Would He Be More Popular in UK?

i stopped reading at page 8.
im american, so i cant speak for the brits. however i will give you my take on all of it.
would he be more popular among BOXING FANS in the uk if he were white? not sure really. i think his lack of popularity(if any) might have more to do with class than race. the thing about boxing is seeing the best man win, isnt it? who cares what he is, who he "represents". in my book, he represents himself. besides, it has nothing to do with religion and more to do with culture.
basically, all religions are the same, preach the same ****, just with a little twist. any religious person at all has to respect another persons religion, end of. it would only be ignorance that would prevent that respect.
what people see is a cultural difference..and being ****** has nothing to do with it. being of pakistani origins has more to do with it. the english culture and the pakistani are just too different.
i dunno if we americans are less racist. maybe we are just forced to tolerate more. thing is...what is the face of an american? white, brown, black, red,yellow..male, female? its all of it. has that become true in england? dunno.
when kahn fought paulie, my brooklyn neighborhood ofcourse supported our homeboy. you want your own to win. this is natural. and i watched the fight with a bunch of family and friends..most of them werent even boxing fans. looking at kahn, he looked like the sicilian. hes not very dark. he doesnt have the "asian" look that most of us are familiar with. so people were confused.
it became clear immediately that he was the better fighter. none of us cared who he was or where he came from. paulies intentions are good, hes just not focused. kahn is more formally trained. more people cheered kahn on than i expected. it was about who was the better fighter.
as far as all of the **** talk, they all do it. "im better than you, ill win, blah blah blah"
personally, i dont like kahn. and thats cos i think he misrepresents himself. he comes off like some goodie two shoes, and he aint. hes a bull****ter just like everyone else. is he a decent fighter? yeah. but id like to see him get the **** kicked out of him. cos hes ******? nah. im an atheist. dont care about that. cos hes a brit and im american? nah. cos hes a pakistani? nah. cos hes an ass? yeah.Comment

I wasn't talking about america alone, and i wasn't saying he's a huge name either. All I'm saying is that his name is considered a big prospect out in the world stage, something that very rarely happens for white british fighters. So what i was saying is, sure he'd be a bigger name and more popular in britain if he were white, but i honestly don't think he'd be considered as big an up & comer on the world stage. like i said double-edge sword.Amir Khan is not a big name outside of the UK, He has only had one American fight. Also people in American dont care about him being Asian or not, They care about his boxing ability.
Like I said before Manny is Far-Eastern and gets massive support in the US, In the UK only place Manny would get support is China town restaurant. The thread question is if Amir Khan was White would be more popular in the UK?...Not if he was white would he be more popular in the World.
Also in the USA you dont see the KKK saying things like "Mayweather should be sent back to Africa", "Manny should become a protestant". Simply put Americans just dont seem to care about race/religion. But in the UK the BNP say things like "Khan should go back to Pakistan", "Khan is a ******" also just go into any local bar when Khan is fighting and hear the kind of racist comments that are made.Comment

Also, I'm not denying that there's underlying racial issues in the UK, just like everywhere else. I know the US can be accepting of different races and faiths, but that really depends on where in the US you are.Comment

its the irish and scots who are the problem. they hate england simply becasue england beats them at everything. plus they inherittly racist so the khan hate from them should not be suprising. north of england is full ofcouncil estates chavs, they would hate khan.
others hate him for his suposedly arrogance etc. but the majority of english people support him, he wouldnt be selling out arena from arenaif that wasnt the case. id say over 80% of people who actually are at the stadiums are whiteComment

This is such a great post, From a member that only has 6 posts in total it sure is quality over quantity. I agree with you on each point. But I will say that the US is a very tolerant nation like you said what is the face of an American? White, Black,Brown, Yellow? Mixed? Its all of them. Thats not true in the UK yet.i stopped reading at page 8.

The problem that the UK faces is that its not really a country, Its more like 4 countries forced into one, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, There is no such thing as Britsh to be honest. We have failed to create a national identity that is not based on ethnicity or religion, Thats why were are so behind the US in every single field.

Britain actually has very good race relations in my experience, and particularly in the south. Its difficult to find yourself prejudiced when you are raised on a playground which is hugely diverse in terms of heritage.
There are tribal issues of course, as there are everywhere.
You can find racists anywhere in the world though, and that term is basically synonymous with ignorance.
In my opinion Khan's problem has very little to do with race. I've met a lot of Pakistani guys in Manchester who dislike him because they know him and say he has a history of arrogance, walking up to girls saying 'do you know who I am?', things like this. To his credit, I also spoke to a guy recently who said that he has settled down in recent times.
I was a great fan of Khan during the Olympics, and remain a fan today as he is a British hopeful, and a skilful fighter.
But the way his career was formed, fighting that long series of club fighters, never does anything to endear a fighter to the boxing public.
The fact that he was appearing all over Reebok adverts before he had proved himself at the professional world level, did not endear him to fans of the sport. For these reasons his knockout loss was largely received as both comeuppance and proof of his limitations.
Furthermore, he overplayed the 'hard done by' hand and effectively calling the public racist wasn't going to win him any new fans.
The British public by and large want to see someone taking the challenges, and taking them with grace and courage. That's why guys like Cooper and Bruno, though limited, will be lauded in posterity.
I don't see the reception of Khan being any different if he was white if these facts were to remain the same.
Saying that, his rebound to the world stage is a genuine accomplishment. He has proved his heart and most British boxing fans that I know want him to do well.
I'd like to see him engage with the public more, chin a few big punchers and test himself fully. I want him to go far.
I couldn't give a **** what colour his skin is.Last edited by Cereal; 06-13-2010, 06:54 AM.Comment
