I can't say exactly where the style originated but I can say that it has been around for a long time, maybe since the very beginning as the use of the shoulder for defense is quite natural. Most fighters in the mid 1900's did utilize the "shoulder roll" as a defensive mechanism, although not as consistently as Floyd Mayweather or George Benton.
Mayweather himself learned it from his father and uncle, who both used the shoulder roll:
Roger learned it from his brother, Floyd Sr. learned it from old Michigan trainers and perhaps was self-taught to some extent.Comment
