The Origin of Floyd Mayweather's defensive style?

Thanks to poster TheGreatA for pointing this out, introducin George Benton:

Benton was a Philly fighter, perhaps that's why the Floyd defense is sometimes called "The Philly Shell defense".

After he he retired, Among the fighters he trained were Evander Holyfield, Mike McCallum, Meldrick Taylor, and Pernell Whitaker.

I seen this video before. Very good technique.

But he actually got it from James Toney and some other Michigan fighters in that same circle.

I said origin. Was James Toney born in the 1930's?

This guy is one of the first to implement the shoulder roll/ philly shell in boxing.

Meldrick Taylor wow! With that speed Meldrick had can you imagine how great he would have been if he used that philly shell style?

I don`t understand why he did`nt use that style. He would`nt have been ruined by Chavez if he used that style.

I know about Willie Pep, Charley Burley I will check him out.

Always enjoy finding about the old fighters from the past who aren't mentioned as often as SRR and the likes.

Watching fights like this is a great reminder that fighters from the old school were just as good, if not better, than fighters today.
