All they need to do is download Pernell's stuff. If you love watching Floyd's mastery, then without question you'll love watching Pernell Whitaker. I believe that they've seen very little of him/ or when he was past his prime.Comment

I wouldn't claim defensive superiority but I'd put him at that level. Mayweather, Whitaker, Locche, all were almost impossible to land punches consistently on at their peak. As a fighter I don't rate Locche among the greatest but he accomplished quite a lot despite having no punch and doing little training for his fights, which is a testament to how good he was defensively as he went 117-4 against solid opposition.
The differences in defensive mastery and effectiveness are marginal at best in my opinion. Statistically Whitaker may have been hit more than Mayweather but then again he was also more aggressive and threw approximately 800 punches on average, while Mayweather throws about half the amount of punches. Whitaker could afford to be more offensive, as he could avoid punches even at close range, while much of Mayweather's effectiveness comes from him thinking defense at all times and never putting himself at risk.
In my view the greatest defensive fighter of all time is still Willie Pep, although without an extensive amount of film on him it's difficult to claim that his defense was truly the best. However, like Mayweather, Whitaker and Locche, and unlike Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong and Harry Greb, who were offensive fighters, his style was defense first and in my opinion Pep accomplished the most with that particular style. I won't say that his defense was any better but there isn't a defensive fighter more accomplished than him as far as I can see.Comment

Agreed. I would recommend Whitaker -Haugan,Ramirez 1and2,and Roger Mayweather to start. Whitaker-Pineda was a masterpiece. Poli Diaz, the Buddy Mcgirt rematch, the Julio Cesar Chavez fight, I can go on and on.
