BERNARD HOPKINS WANTS FIGHT WITH LUCIAN BUTE

GL: It's been a few days since our last convo. I imagine you've been giving some serious thought to a lot of issues, including your next fight, so what's good?
Hopkins: "Everything has been pretty busy, I've been clearing a lot of things out in my boxing business life and knowing what I'm going to do going forward. As you mentioned, I have been thinking about who I would like to fight, if I could make the fight, and the name that came to my mind, because he's a helluva fighter and a good challenge for me, is Lucian Bute. He's fighting Edison Miranda next. I think that would be a fight people would be interested in, especially in his hometown, which is righ outside the United States. My thing is that, they say there's no fights out there for Bernard Hopkins. If they think I'm vulnerable because they seen Roy Jones survive and be reluctant and make it an ugly fight, but Bute won't do that.
"At the end of the day, there is a marquee fight out there for Bernard Hopkins. Whether they accept that or they view it as a bigger risk than Miranda, who they view as little risk, and then he gets exposed. I think HBO would love the fight. Some people have already written me off for fighting half of a fight seeing spots. I didn't quit, I fought through it, unlike some young fighters who have recently been exposed on national TV and brought right back against low risk opposition.
"When I say that I'm a warrior and I'll fight, I'll fight to the end. I understand that certain people care about me and I care about them too. But I have to do what's right for me and for my family as long as I could do what I could do without embarassing myself. I've told you before and I'll tell you again, I don't feel that I deserve to be thrown into a twelve foot grave with Roy Jones Jr. But I know there's agendas out there who would like to tie me in any way they can to get me out of boxing.
"It started with the Kelly Pavlik fight. It wasn't a fight that I was supposed to win and it wasn't a fight they wanted me to win and that's why I was sitting for 15 months after I won it easily. They promised me dates, they promised me this and that, and I really was forced to fight in Decmeber and to fight Roy Jones Jr just so I don't have to sit another year and half.
"At the end of the day, I have to do right for me and my family. If anybody thinks I'm done, they're out of their minds. I'm the biggest threat to a lot of guys out there and I know that. I've made a lot of smart moves in my life and I know when to get out. Guess what Greg? I'm smart enough not to stay in this game and make myself look like an idiot."
GL: Have you and Richard Schafer spoken since he first made the remarks to ESPN, which you recently responded to on ESPN?
Bernard Hopkins: "I spoke to Richard Monday before we left from Las Vegas. I had him on the speaker and I was with my wife. I asked him about what he said on the internet, because I hadn't read it yet, I just got a call about it. I asked him about saying that I should retire, and I told him I know you didn't say that, why would you push me in the grave with Roy Jones Jr? He said that he cared for me and that he respects me and my beautiful family. He never saw me in that state before where I was dizzy in the dressing room and I fell trying to sit down. Richard told me to get the transcript and to get the tape, because he didn't say that. He said he never said it.
"Now that I'm home I can't really relax the way I want to after a tough fight. Instead I have to go public and clear the perception that I'm shot and done. These agendas are old agendas and they're trying to get me out of the way. Maybe they can't make money off me anymore."
GL: A fight with you and Bute would certainly be a moneymaker. He's a super middleweight champion, what's the lowest you can go to make the fight happen?
BH: "170 pounds. I've done it with Kelly Pavlik and Winky Wright. The lowest I can go is 170 and that makes it a win-win for Bute because after he loses he still has his belt, just like Kelly Pavlik. If he takes care of business against Edison Miranda, which he should, I'll help him get a legend on his record and based on how I win that fight, he'll help me create a Canadian Kelly Pavlik. It's a no-brainer, Bute and his people have to want a real challenge though, they can't keep fighting the Andrade's and Miranda's of the world, so hopefully they want to step it up."
